YICS Bikes have the YICS Port under the intakes.
    Non-YICS Bikes don't.

The later models of Yamaha (1982 & newer) use a YICS ( Yamaha Induction Control System) which is basically a vacuum balancing system in the intake manifold.

Connects all the carbs via holes in the head. In a way balances them.

If it truly balances them, why bother synching them at all? That is my question, Horatio!

You know, I've been wondering if there is any advantage to checking and then cleaning the YICS port? I suspect it gets full of gunk over time, maybe.

Are you suggesting that you question the Yamah marketing department's claim that YICS is totally "maintenance-free"?

The port is very easy to clean. Place the bike on the sidestand (so the port is not level). Remove both plug bolts. Spray carb cleaner until it runs out the lower port, then pass a gun cleaning rod with a bronze brush through it a couple times (9mm brush works well- port is a little over 3/8 dia). Spray it clean with more carb cleaner and compressed air (if available). Close it up and fire up the bike. I usually do this a couple days prior to synching the carbs. The port can get carboned up, which makes it harder to insert the YICS tool.

I have a nice, solid pine, 3/8th, dowel; stained a nice, deep, mahogany ... just for pushing inside-out athletic socks, soaked in carb cleaner, all the way through the YICS Port.

    It gets nasty in there.

You never cease to amaze me.

Can dress socks work as well, or does it have to be athletic socks? :)

When I had the Summer Carb Clinic, we cleaned-out the YICS Port on a Members Maxim-X by loading the port with wads of cloth, like we were loading a Musket.

The early patches of wadding came-out dark and oily. Eventually, we got the passage cleaned-up to the point where the YICS Tool fit and didn't get jammed-up trying to get it in the port.
