85xj750 breakdown, overhaul and rebuild

    Well i'm finally gonna do it ... :lol:
    Redo my MaximX that is, I had it apart once, fixed it up, quick paint job put it back together and then decided I should have taken my time. I had fuel problems which ruined some paint and stuff, and other minor problems, so gonna lay it up and start over, and do it right.
    I started taking it apart again, and wish I had a bigger shed. I will be posting up some pics when I can. There some pics at

    Im not in that shed anymore, that was up on top of a hill 1/2km away from home and no power, now I'm 30m (100') away from home and have power.

    What i'm thinking of doing
    New rear fender, as seen in picture (princess auto special)
    new headlight and markerlights
    new Taillight/markerlights
    bigger front tire, no or different front fender
    lower the rearend
    forward controls, and floorboards
    new horns
    handle bars 10.5"center, End: 33", Rise: 8", Pullback: 6.5" may have black chromed
    digital speedo from trailtech
    mirrors
    redoing seats
    Paintjob: Going with Black/Red theme, and some black chrome i think.
    probably paint engine black with red accents, or red with black accents, or black with red, and black chrome accents.
    Tank and fender(s)will probably be a candy red
    Now, where is my winning lotto ticket ... oh gotta go buy one.

    well the bike is almost completely stripped!, gotta remove engine, tires and forks.

    Was thinking of lining my gas tank, is that something that can be done on my own? If so what would be a good procedure and product.
    Once i have bike down to frame I would like to repaint it with a good quality paint that will prevent rusting and corrosion, and have a nice shine.

    Hey buddy...glad to see you moving forward on your build! Will be awaiting your progress and to hopefully see it in person once you're riding it again. I did my gas tank with this stuff when I was rebuilding my bike and it has performed in an excellent manner. It's called POR-15 and you can order it online from Ontario. Here's the link.

    It is better than the other types I've tried in the past for sure. Good luck with your project!

    I've also had good luck with POR15.

    You should consider powder coating the frame instead of painting it.
    The coating is much stronger than most paint jobs and will handle the abuse.
    Unfortunately it's not something most of us can do in our garage (you have to heat the entire part to about 350 deg F to melt the coating)

    Good luck with the project, I have the exact same rebuild with the exact same bike that I need to get at. Keep us posted with lots of pics. Let us know how you make out with the POR15 tank liner too!!

    Doing a little research ... was wondering what parts on the 85 750X are aluminum and what are steel, reason for info needed is chroming.

    It depends on how much polishing you want to do. I have polished some of my aluminum parts with excellent results, and other parts (both aluminum and steel) were sent for chroming. Depended on my laziness and cash flow.

    I am thinking of trying to chrome, but if its aluminum I have to coat it in Zincate so the chorme will work right.

    Polishing the aluminum isn't that tough once you get a couple tools.

    The other cool thing you can do is creat some contrast by bead blasting the recessed areas and polishing the high spots. (like the brake drum and fender stays)
    Did the passenger pegs this weekend.

    There are a LOT of parts to list out Zack.
    Can you narrow it down a bit?
    Frame members, swing arm, centerstand, side stand and driver footpeg mounts are steel.

    Rear brake arm, shocks, handlebars, headlight rim, footpegs on the '85 etc are chromed steel.
    Final drive is painted steel

    Triple tree and lower fork tubes are aluminum.
    The list goes on and on.

    Tough parts are the chromed plastic like tailight housing, signal lights, and airbox covers (among others)

    Here's what you need to make that Aluminum look better than Chrome.

    The Rouges that are in the Tubes, ... I got at LOWES.
    You can get them Online in "Sticks" cheaper.

    The Buffing Wheels are all different Stiffnesses.
    Some are sewn others are soft.
    The Tube of ZAM is expensive. But, it will take light scratches out of Chrome.

    I've used the same compounds on mine...great stuff. Have some setup to get rid of the waxy fibers that become airborne. I didn't at first and I'm still finding greasy messes everywhere. I set up my shop vac to suck up the fibers as they come off the buffer. If you don't do this, you'll regret it later.

    well finally got the motor out, so its completely stripped down. Gonna get some soda media and blast everything, and then start buying parts as i get them to put it back together.

    I just used a POR-15 tank kit on my XJ's tank a few weeks ago. it wasn't hard at all and it turned out great. Just make sure you get all of the excess out. After I had the whole inside coated I just tipped it up and let it sit for 15 min at a time, dumped the excess out of the petcock hole, and repeated that 10 times or so. Good luck.

    Great info. my '90 gsxr 1100 has the frame, swingarm, and wheels polished. I love Mother's, but I need to tear it down and do a thorough job with a kit like this. The only bad thing about polished bits is the upkeep. It's a never ending time consuming process. In a year or two I THINK I might change up my gsxr...... frame/swinger powdercoated black and the wheels and some other accent bits painted or pc'd a metallic red or chrome red....whatever you want to call it.
