I hope this is the proper place for this question, if not I appologize. I am looking to buy A Maxim. My wife recently bought a 400 and I drove it home for her. She is still a new rider and it had rained a little which makes her nervous. Anyhow it was the most enjoyable ride I have ever taken and so much more comfortable than my Bandit. As I was looking through the ad's I noticed one guy advertising a 1983 Midnight Maxim 750 and I was wondering how this differed from a regular Maxim. Thank you!

Buy it. It is all black, and other than that it is as regular of a maxim you can get.

Hold on a sec. The bike that was so comfortable was a 400 Max; a 750 is going to be a tad bigger.

The "Maxim" was the cruiser-styled XJ, and it came in 400, 550, 650, 750 and (sort of) 1100CC versions.

The "Midnight" series were simply blacked-out versions with a lot of gold trim. It was purely a cosmetic package.

I would definitely look at it; but the 750 will have quite a different feel than the 400.

Agreed, a ton more power and 100 or so pounds heavier

    More than 100lbs.

My 650 Seca weighs 100lbs more than the 550s, and they gotta weigh more than the 400. Probably about 130lbs heavier.

Thanks for the info guys. I was saying the Maxim was far more comfortable than my current ride which is a Suzuki Bandit 1200. After an hour or so my elbow and back begins to ache, which I recon is just father time kicking me in the hind end and telling me I'm getting too old for sportbikes. The Midnight looks nice but there is also a 700 Maxim that looks immaculate.

My Daily Rider is a Midnight Maxim I hauled-off a guy's property thinking to make a quick buck parting the thing out.

Then, I looked at the Speedo and saw there was only 8,000 Miles on the thing.
Parked outside my garage, tonight, she's sitting there with 22,500 and climbing.

    Fun bike.

hmmm..... first it's the 400, then it's a 750 Midnight, then it's an immaculate 700.. Next he's gonna tell us that it's next to a brand new never even started up before 900 seca with every factory option immagineable and all the original paperwork.

Seriously, both the 750 and the 700 are nice. Look close and see if the 700 is liquid-cooled. If so, it's a 700x, and grab it. Let us know what you end up getting!

I really like the 700 but I am kinda a big guy, 6'4" 300 lbs., So I dont know if the 750 has the extra power to haul me around. When I rode my wifes 400 it did pretty good on flat ground but the poor little bugger struggled a bit going up hills. But that 700 is so dang pretty.

Just another question, I appologize if I am being a pest. But which do you think would have more power, the Maxim X or a Seca xj650 turbo?

looks like they make about the same power but the turbo is not as quick 85 made less power then the 86 turbo runs anywhere between 12.1 to 12.6 vs 11.7 for the x the turbo more then likely will need a turbo by now if it hasnt allready been replaced

Well I tried ot the Maxim X. It sure was cold blooded, it stalled a couple times from dead stop, but once temp got a little above the C on the gauge it seemed to run better. The guy said when he had carbs worked on he was told that diaphrams were old and could be causing the rough running till it heats up. Peg positions was kinda close and my legs were at an angle slightlt back, wasnt too uncomfortable but think legs would need a good stretch after a while. Looking at a Virago that seemed to have a more forward peg position. It is obvious you folks really like the xj's but what do you think about the xv's? Thank you all.

You must be the only guy left on the Planet that didn't get the Trouble Report Information for the notorious XV-Bikes.

Virago's have the worst designed STARTERS in the Entire known Cosmos.

    Take an Empty Beer Can.
Push-in 3 Dimes through the opening.
Put your Thumb over the hole and SHAKE the Can as hard as you can, ... trying to make as much noise as possible.

That's what you hear trying to get a Virago to start!

That's a 700X, great bike. I f I had to choose between the Midnight 750 and the 700, I'd choose the 700 it's slightly newer and its in great shape.

Well I stuck with the Yamaha brand but not an XJ, I now have a 1980 XS1100 Special in the garage. Cosmetically and mechanically it is pretty nice and only had 6445 miles. Took a quick 60 mile ride and it performed great.

Well.... the xv question: the answer? look at my signature listings. That'll answer a lot of it. The starter issue-was primarily the 81-83 generation along with a couple versions in the next gen. But it was straightened out for the 85 xv700 and then as I understand it, all the xv1100's are fine.
