i have a 1992 yamaha xj 600 seca 2 i can charge the battery and it will run and drive fine but after about 45 mins or so you can see the lights getting dimmer and then it back fires and cuts off. so my friend told me to charge it and then take one of the battery cables off so i took of the positve while it was running and it dies and so he is sayin the stator is bad i think its something eles maybe i am wrong any ideas

I agree your charging system is screwed somewhere.

Really you are guessing what might be wrong. You need a multi meter to actually measure the voltage at the battery and to see if it is charging up. The secaII is fitted with a permanent magnet rotor (so no brushes) and i would start by using the meter to measure the resistance of the stator windings against the spec in the workshop manual. i don't have a secaII but you should have "Continuity" between all 3 white wires and no circuit between the white wires and ground.

It is possible the voltage regulator has failed (More likely than the windings) - but the way to prove this is to eliminate the stator.

You haven't recently done any work around the stator area ? - another member accidentally shorted the wiring to ground when he refitted a cover.

EDIT: Don't disconnect the battery while the bike is running - you might damage the TCI/ignition system!

AGREED. Guessing at diagnosis and "shotgun" repairs can get expensive, especially when you guess wrong.

Markie's advice is spot-on-- you might be about to replace something that doesn't need replacing.

Did you take the guy's advice and check the original stator out with a meter? If it checks out, check all connections to make sure they are tight and not corroded. Make sure there are no broken wires and after eliminating all that then it is probably the regulator. As far as the extra stator you bought sounds like you got yourself a paper weight unless you can figure out the extra wire of the original.

    Check your wiring diagram!

The Seca II has a permanent magnet alternator - the 3 white wires come from the stator and the single red goes to the battery. So there are 4 wires plugged into the regulator. I believe all US SecaIIs are like this. later Euro models had a 5th wire - a black which is just a ground.

The stator/regulator are at the bottom left of the diagram. NOTE Are you trying to connect the stator direct to the regulator by mistake? The stator connects into the loom then the loom connects to the regulator!

was the battery fully charged thats whats hardest on a stator is weak or low battery. with it steadily dropping sounds like its ok. hows the regulator is it getting hot also

It sounds like there is a short circuit somewhere. Did you check the stator winding resistances are equal and there is no circuit between the white wires and earth?

Have you changed the regulator? I think this is more likely to fail than the stator, in fact, Yamaha changed the regulator design in later bikes.

There is a possibility the regulator has an internal fault which is causing the overheating.

Check the stator wiring again and if it is good, get a replacement regulator.

Ok i will try and get the regulator and see, Both the stator cover and regulator were hot.
