hi all- running and starting issue-i need help please

hi, i need alot of help.i have a 82 xj550r seca with ycis.it'll start up and idle for about 5-10 minutes then it'll stall when i try to start it up again it won't.all it'll do is crank.10 to 15 minutes later it'll start up again and then stall out 5-10 minutes later.over and over again.i tried full choke and trying to start,full throttle and trying to start still nothing.there is plenty of gas.oil is leveled.slight valve cover leak.it has about 40,000 miles on it.fuses have been converted to blade type. thank you for looking.

 

Sounds like there is very weak fuel flow to the carbs. Did you check the fuel filter? These bikes should have an additional filter installed after the tank.

Another thing that can cause weak flow is a leaking vacuum hose to the petkok (sic). Try running it on the "prime" petkok setting. Make sure you turn it back to "on" when the engine isn't running. If it runs on "prime" then you most likely have a leaking vacuum hose.

 

I wasn't so much concerned with it's orientation as to weather it's clean or not. You should also check the stock fuel filter in the petkok assembly. An old fuel tank like that will provide plenty of crud for plugging it up, if it hasn't been treated.

 

that or the battery maybe. pull the fuel tube off the carbs, get a cup or something, turn the petcock to PRI and see if the flow is good. all this with the fuel filter connected - if there is one.

 

tried on the pri setting-still doing the same thing-i moved it back to run for now-it's flowing when set to pri and hose off.

Sounds like the valves are tight,when it heats up the valves are not opening enough hence you cannot restart it until it cools down,,,,,,

 

do a float level check by attachinig a clear hose to the carb bowl, put bike on centerr stand level ground. Have hose loop up too screws that hold bowl onto carb bod. Set to prime on petcock and open screw on carb bowl. Gas should flow through tube and should stop just at screw head that holds carb bowl to carb.

Could be a blocked gas cap vent as well.
