I looking for an exhaust system for my 83 XJ750. Will exhaust systems from other XJ's (550, 650) fit the 750.

    Thanks,
    Ceorl

As long as they're 4 into 1 or 4 into 2, I suppose they will fit. Provided you haven't done many modifications to the areas where the exhaust curves...

What I've noticed is that some years and makes have collector boxes and others have crossover pipes. I have the collector box on mine. I'd like to know if there's a way to make the crossover version work without any major modification.

Also, if I decide to go with an aftermarket exhaust system, does anyone have recommendations on which system is better? I know personal look and sound plays a role, but I've read that ground clearance is an issue with some systems. I've also read that MAC systems aren't double-walled and tend to blue. Jordine seems to have a good name, but are expensive.

The truth is, I'd like to buy an orginal system.

    Any input is welcome,
    Ceorl

I'm pretty sure 550 won't fit...the header pipe diameter is different. And of course new OEM exhaust just isn't available, and aftermarket systems can be had for $300-$400. Just be mindful that you may need to rejet depending on the type of exhaust you get.

Is your only reason for changing the exhaust that you want the crossover pipe? Or is the current system damaged or rotted out? I will tell you from my experience, mine came with a MAC 4-2 (no ground clearance problems with 4-2), but I would have rather had the OEM. My baffles were damaged by the PO and finding replacement baffles was difficult (involving some cutting and welding) and I had to reject the carbs. The collector is supposed to help with tuning. Are you running with the original airbox?

i beleive the crossover tubes and collector boxes were installed depending if it was a Maxim or Seca. It definitely wouldn't be difficult to put one on the other, worst case get a mounting tab welded at the bottom of the frame

I would much rather have an OEM exhaust. I had an 82 XJ750 maxim years ago, and replaced the exhaust with a Vance & Hines 4 to 1; I thought it would be cool. But, I realized, soon after, I preferred the orginal. I'd prefer to not make the same mistake.

I'm rebuilding the entire topside (new rings, valve job, etc) of a bike I bought last year, and the exhaust system is pretty ratty. I was pulling the header pipes off the collector, and part of the inner ring of one of the collector intakes broke off and is rusted to one of the exhaust pipes (it least half of it, anyway). I'm weighing my options, only because OEM's are hard to find. I believe the exhaust for the 650's and750's are interchangable, but some have collector boxes, and others, crossover pipes. I don't really care which one I have, as long as I can make either work.

I'm replacing the airbox with cones, and I'm buying new jets for the carbs. I still have the original airbox, but my preference has always been to jet and cone.

I'm in the market for an OEM exhaust if anyone has one.

    Thanks,
    Ceorl
