so I asked my insurance agent the other day about putting collision or comp on the xj. Seems she can't do it. uh huh what?? So it appears that if you have a harley( could be a beat up piece thats 40 yrs old theyl insure it all day long but not a Yamaha. Yes my bike is probably only worth 1600-1800 to the right buyer. But what if some moron backs into it and wrecks the paint, mirrors, exhaust bla blah blah. I know they would fix it but They would pay a fair amount and at least I wouldn't be out of a bike or have to come up with the $$ to fix it. I don't mind paying the little more a year for coverage. Rant OFF!

So the question Has anyone in Michigan had or has full coverage or comp on thier bike? if so let me know the company if you would so I can check into it. thx.

I just went on progressive last night and I was testing out various coverages to get prices, never said my bike couldnt get any of that- just do it online and as long as you can get it online, they HAVE to cover you... if they dont for whatever reason that you ride a yamaha... there's a number we michigan people know by heart, 1-800-CALL-SAM

lol, but seriously, that may be your best bet.

I'm going to start a mini rant- WHY does michigan charge us $130 in taxes and bullpoo for insurance?!?!!?!?! my insurance would be like $150 a year if it werent for that...

I have Progressive and have full coverage on my 86 XJ700.
I also live in Ohio, but not sure why that would make a big difference.
I pay like $150 a year and thats with inflated limits.

I keep just enough liability on mine to get her on the road. If it were wrecked the insurance is most likely to only pay out book vaule on the bike anyway unless you have special equipment coverage. I pay the gecko $100/yr.

Only $86 a year, but no full coverage because the bike is too old.

Not that I care, I park WAY out of the way when I go somewhere and its mostly back road ridden.

But my insurance would be the same for a 91 VFR750 which is funny to me, and for a ninja 250 it drops to only $50 a year. lol

Haggerty Collector's Insurance, on my Norton. Haven't tried for any of the XJs yet. Worth a call anyway, nice folks.

That is for the Catastrophic Claims Recovery Act; to help the State pay for injuries (and worse) for uninsured motorists. It's going up to $143/vehicle/year for next year.

just got a quote from State farm:

Male, 35, no tickets/ accidents, driving car for more than 5 years, new biker, 83 650 Maxim

    134.71/month for full coverage
    115.40/month for public liability

I was surprised with the little difference in rates :S

For those in CDN, Jevco apparently has the best stand alone rates for PLPD coverage. I've called about insurance for the '82 XJ650 I'm working on (JUST GOT THE TANK AND COVERS BACK FROM SHOP, PAINT LOOKS AMAZEBALLZ!) and was surprised that its the SAME cost per year as my 2002 Honda Shadow ACE 750. Give your broker a call and ask about a quote from Jevco...its $513/year for me...which buddy said was the 'base rate' for a motorcycle.

I posted to this same thing last year. My rate was $75 a year for full coverage with a $100 deductable. My bike is insured for $1500. Liability was the same price as full coverage...wt?

$279 USD per year, full coverage, decent limits, $500 deductible, including policy rider for sidecar. Almost forgot, old as dirt, no tickets, no accidents in a very very very long time.

Liability only for XJ is $79/year.

I have Auto Owners PLPD for 220/year.
I got a quote from progressive 220/year with collision and $100.00 deductible. The BS part about it is, I can cover the bike but I can't cover myself. Really, if I get into an accident, the bike is the last thing that I am worried about. That should be illegal, insurance companies suck. And, that extra $130.00 that we pay in Michigan is per vehicle. I have 2 cars and the bike on the road right now, thats $390.00. For that kind of money, one would expect to be riding on pristine roads. But again, this is Michigan, we are second in the country for the worst roads.

OK, I'm done with my rant. Sorry :)

    $115 a month, $1 million liability, new rider :(
    Collison coverage sucks! Had a fender bender a couple of weeks ago, with my cage thank god :D. They declared the car a total loss, over $4500 of aesthetic damage. All I needed was to get my hood a bit straighter. But insurance wouldn't cover it. It NEEDED to be fixed exactly to how it was before the accident by a licensed body shop. All I wanted was my hood a bit straightened out, here's their list;
all replacements parts: hood $250, header panel $200, bumper $200, grill $200, light assembly $150, labor $2000+, etc ????????
So I withdraw the claim, cancelled my collision, used a piece of wood, an old matras and a hamer.

Wow you poor guys in Canada, those are some insane rates. Im jealous of most of you guys, it seems Michigan is twice as much as the rest of the country because of that mcca fee. What a shame, because some people don't bother to buy insurance the people who do the right thing are punished.

The Bad part is my ins. offer Allied, nationwide(same company really) and progressive. Now a friend said with a salvage title you can't get full coverage so maybe that is biting me in the rear. But you would think I could get something. Like stated above it would be nice to get some coverage for me(no health ins) to cover injuries as well and the bike if it isn't too bad. Thx for your replies I guess I have some snoopin around to do.

I am 34 and my insurance is £70 fully comp per year. (at the current exchange) thats about $110 per year fully covered!

That said we pay a rediculous amount for fuel £1.20 per litre thats about £4.56 per us gallon, or $6.84/gallon

Just to follow up on this thread again, i just got a quote from Jevco, 635/year for the 650 with no experience, thats like half of what state farm had quoted me on. Looks like taking a training course would have no effect either, not that i'm complaining about 635/year! Safety next Friday, hopefully things go well!

Ottawa,51 yrs old, no recent bike insurance, Waterloo Insurance, $480.00/yr. She would have knocked an additional 20% off if I gave them my house and car insurance. XJ900.

You REALLY have to shop around. State Farm was over $1,100. Jevco was around $900 and Riders Plus wouldn't insure because my bike (1983) doesn't have the full 17 digit VIN.

Whats up with the non-17 digit VIN in 1983? I thought all vehicles after '81 in North America had a 17 digit number.

    It pays to compare.

Sorry, just had to add my $0.02
Y'all have *NO* idea how lucky you are.
I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Insurance is government run, known as Autopac or MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance)
    '82 400 Seca is $1300/year.
    '84 FJ600 is $1650/year.
And our riding season is maybe 7 months at best. Only want to insure duing season? Yeah well you pay the majority of your anual fee during season, and <$10.00/month off season.
HOWEVER, it's probably the best damned insurance you can get.
You MUST complete a MCSC to get your license, and complete the graduated licensing of riding 30 mins after sunrise and 30 mins after sunset for a min of 9 months before you can even TRY for your full license allowing you to ride at night.

    Blimey..

Here in Switzerland, you need 12 hours mandatory basic training allows you to ride ANY bike you're old enough to ride (Anything over 32horses and you have to be over 25, 125cc for under 21's for the first 2 years) then you have 1 year to train and pass the full licence, which consists of riding in circles and along a plank, doing an emergency stop, then riding through town for half an hour indicating where you are suposed to.

Insurance is $1000 for an XJR1300 2004 and XJ750 on the same plate (meaning I remove the numberplate from one and put it on the other, depending on which I want to ride at the same time.

Yeah. Means you have to take your test on a 650+. Loads of people fail because they get things like Harleys and can't go round corners. I failed first time too, but because I didn't see the speed limit sign and rode too slowly. LoL.

That'll do it. That's neat that they allow a plate to be transferred between bikes -- they must be registered to the owner and not vehicle I suppose?

My 1100 is about $75/month i think, and i believe that's discounted from having a license in good standing. The 400 is $16/month. Goes up every second year it seems, the bigger engines cost more i think because there is a higher rate/cost of claims (injury or worse). It's government insurance btw.

There is currently no requirement to take a course or anything besides a 10 minute (and $10) multiple choice test on a touchscreen computer in order to get a learners license. They are changing that as of next year though so a course will be mandatory as well as novice levels of experience, etc. hopefully the rates will go down as a result (i.e. less claims, etc. resulting from inexperience/invisibility, etc.).

Just one more update (final from me I hope). looks like Jevco isn't the deal originally quoted on. It'll be 910/year as opposed to 1100 at SF. Waterloo insurance won't insure unless you've had your license for over 3 years, I'm clearly not in that boat. At any rate i passed my M1 this morning and the bike has passed Safety, hopefully later this week I'll be two wheelin (legally).

Thats why America is still the best country in the world.
    But it's quickly changing.
All an adult needs to do is show up to pass a 26 question written
test, a simple 15/20 min skills test, and $7.00 US.
Insurance is dirt cheap' if your a good driver and managed to live
    passed thirty.
IT SHOULD BE THAT WAY EVERY WHERE! But the dream of real
freedoms and the persuit of happiness is has become a nightmare
    of government intervention

Until you transfer that from AZ to MD. Then it's $45 for your car license and another $45 to get them to print the M on it on the same day.

$99/year state minimum with the gecko. When the insurance woman tried to apply a discount to my 99/yr policy she couldn't, state of OK not only has mandatory minimum coverage but also mandatory minimum price. I remember at 18 yrs old, no riding experience and my old honda cb900 it was $56/yr. Now 33/yrs, 14 yrs riding, xj650, price almost double. Go figure!

I actually agree and LIKE the graduated licensing. There are too many accidents where people get on these machines with no experience, or only self-taught with bad habits and no real training. Since it started it has drastically reduced motorcycle accidents in general here in Manitoba, both for rider fault and not. However there are still the accidents for those who have NOT completed the training. I don't give a damn if someone wants to jump on ANY bike without training and go kill themselves. But if you have the potential to take anyone with you, or cause anyone else harm? Yeah, you should have training, and a license.
I just wish there was a reduced or at least more realistic insurance rate here. Maybe greater discounts for years of clean riding/levels of training.

Which (US) brand actually offers a GOOD amount of medical in case I (and/or rider) get hurt.

Checked Progressive and Geiko online - Both barely have any medical coverage. One of them only offered a max of $2000... That wouldn't even pay for ER bills let alone major medical needs...

Maybe I'm not familiar enough with insurance - The wife usually pays for it for our cages LOL

If you have medical insurance through your work, a seperate policy, or whatever then you shouldn't need extra just for the bike. Unless you have a high deductable on your heath insurance then the medical on the bike insurance could be used to pay that.
