So I'm on the way home tonight from work and, as I'm coming through Granite Falls, I see a fellow motorcyclist sitting in front of the Nelson Petroleum station. He's kneeling down next to a pretty nice looking Yamaha XJ550, black in color. It looks just like mine, only chain driven. I can tell he's having problems so I pull in next to him.

Sure enough, his chain has come off and he has no clue on how to fix it. I examine the situation and quickly figure out the chain is balled up at the front sprocket. Not good. He tells me he has friends on the way with some tools but would appreciate my help as he's never worked on the bike. No problem, I tell him.

Once the tools show, I have him remove the shifter, the foot peg, and the chain guard. This is what we found:

Not pretty at all. We got it all straightened out, though. Turned out he had about five inches of deflection in his chain. No wonder it came off, right? After we got everything buttoned up, he came over and shook my hand and thanked me for helping him out. I reminded him to replace the chain, etc. and headed home.

Always a good feeling to help out a fellow XJ rider. 8)

Great show of comradery, I hope you told him how to find us when he gets home. By the look of that chain I can only hope he looks after the rest of the bike better, otherwise you should have kicked his nuts for motorcycle abuse! 8O

He said he's only had the bike for six months. I did plug XJBikes.com, but he said he had never heard of it. (Face-palm, right?) I'll see him again--I'm sure--and I'll instruct him further in the finer XJ arts. :)

that's awesome man, good job. If I have the time I would help anyone on the road w/ a bike problem, XJ's preferred but whatever. If it were an XJ I'd probably make time

That's awesome. How satisfying is it to see a stranded biker (an XJ no less!), diagnose the problem where he can't, know how to fix it, fix it, and have him drive home on it.

    Great stuff!

What was neat for me was the fact that I had never actually seen an XJ550 up close and personal, yet I instinctively knew how to fix it. How? From the years of exposure to the various models on XJBikes.com. My success in helping this novice rider is a tribute to the brain-trust that is XJBikes.com.

Like I said on the other forum, Don, You've helped me many times. Good karma happens for guys like you, although we Christians have another name for it.
