BRK Warning Light

    Hello,
    This is my very first post to the forum and actually the very first purchase of a motorcycle. I purchased a 82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim. I replaced the carbs and did some cleaning on it. Well, long story short after riding it a short time about 2 miles the BRK warning light came on. I have no clue what has caused this or why?

    I know I need a new solenoid and a new battery. Can this be the cause?

    Welcome to the site
    check both master cylinders they both have switches in them for low fluid
    may be best to find out what is going on before your next ride
    I have a 1100 not a 750 so may be different.
    If you don't have a book look at the "XJCD" in form

    I'm Assuming that I have to purchase the Book? If so is there anyway someone can look it up for me. I'm really strapped for money at the moment or I really would buy it. I"m just not quite sure were these switches are for the Master Cylinders.

    There's NO Rear Master Cylinder, so don't worry about that!

    The FIRST thing to check is:
    Front Brake Pads.

    The System is designed to warn you when the FLUID in the Master Cylinder gets LOW because the PADS have worn down beyond the limit.

    That, ... or: The Brake Fluid is leaking causing the Low Level Sensor to Light.

    What should YOU do:
    KNOW the condition of your Front and Rear Brakes.
    You NEED Brakes you can trust with your LIFE.

    Eyeball the Front Brakes.
    If the Wear Slot is gone.
    Replace the Front Pads and Flush NEW Fluid through the Front Brake System.

    INSPECT the Rear Brakes:
    Original Rear Brakes are known to de-laminate.
    Celebrate your Bike.
    Put some NEW Shoes on the Rear Brakes and enjoy the peace of mind you have NEW Brakes.

    Thanks for All the Replies. Took it to shop they said the rear brakes were sticking a voila its fixed! Thanks a lot guys!

    Umm....it's nice that it's "fixed" but the rear brakes wouldn't cause a warning light. Listen to Rick, you NEED to be able to trust you brakes with your LIFE. Unless I'm missing something, the rear brake in an XJ750 maxim is an expanding shoe (drum) brake. It has NO sensors, only a switch to activate your brake light activated off of the pedal.

    XJCD costs $10. If you are really strapped for cash, you have to spend good money gettting all the new parts you need to make ABSOLUTELY sure that you bike will run right, handle right, and most importantly STOP when you need it to. Then....do the work yourself. You CAN do it! People on this forum are here to help. Your "new" bike will quickly become unaffordable if you take it to a shop to fix everything.

    Read chacal's thread on the real cost of maintenance. Bigfitz52 also had a rant about these old bikes. These are great bikes, but the are almost 3 decades old, so stuff will need fixing You're lucky a shop even looked at it. And finally...never trust the PO.

    Get the XJCD Set.
    Lots of people get them.
    There's nothing legit about them.
    They are 100%, Fraudulently Pirated, Violations of the YAMAHA Worldwide Copyright to its Literature and Photographs.

    They'll sell you the Bum's-rush about it being OK that the XJCD Set is somehow legitimized because all you are doing is paying for processing.

    When "The Man" finally catches-up with these guys, they're going to be way up to the deep part of Sheets-Creek.
    They fraudulently removed the Copyright Pages from the works they pirated.

    The First Offense is: $500
    The Second Offense is: $2,500.00
    The Third Offense is Criminal, with the Penalties running into BIG MONEY for EACH Offense.

    You get you own personal copy of a Manual somebody Xeroxed, scanned and put on a CD.

    While they're still getting away with it.

    LOL Rick,

    kaetalumin, I wouldn't take your bike to a shop imo! It's a 30 year old bike, it'll be an endless flow of money into their pockets. Like ManBot13 said, the fact they "fixed it" with the rear brake says it all.
    I think somewhere in the "modifications" section some1 posted a link to the Haynes repair manual, that's where I got mine. Get reading, studying and enjoy becoming a backyard mechanic.
