New XJ owner and new member with questions.

Hello everyone,

I just bought a 1983 XJ650 today. I am going to pick it up and bring it home Saturday morning. The bike looks great and has 21K on it.

Can someone please tell me what I should check first as soon as I get it home?

And where do I get parts if I need them or is eBay the only place?

REAR BRAKE SHOES! These bikes have a known issue with delamination: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Immediately flush & replace the brake fluid, and plan on new lines SOON.

Check the valve clearances, often overlooked due to perceived difficulty.

Check date codes on the tires, anything over 6 years old has to go.

Check the fuse box, and immediately fit an inline fuel filter.

Get a service manual or two and go through the "maintenance" section item by item, leaving nothing out. Clean, inspect and replace anything you find that is worn out or deteriorated from age; plan on replacing any gasket you disturb at least the first time.
