Converting from drum to disc.

    I am thinking that i would like to change to disc brake on the rear of my 81XJ650. I was thinking maybe one off of an XS650 would be a direct interchange, with the master cyl. pedal, switch, and all. Anyone done this on a 650? Just curious. That rear drum is driving me crazy.

    You aren't going to find a direct bolt on for it. I would say perhaps the easiest way it to adapt a 1100 xj or xs rear rim to it, wich isn't going to be easy, pretty sure they have a lot of differences on the drive spline and the bolt pattern is different. I see you have an xs 11, take a look and see what it would take. I think that would be easiest way to go, but I don't really know.

    The problem is the hub. The XS650 was a chain driven bike; the whole hub is a much more compact affair.

    The best bet would be to sniff Yamaha shaft-drive bikes, regardless of motor, for one that might swap.

    What is it about the Rear Brakes that an:
    Overhaul the with New Shoes,
    Lubricating the Shaft of the Brake Shoes Expanding Cam,
    Grinding the Brake Drum Rust Ridge out,
    Chamfering the New Shoes,
    NewShoe Hardware Springs and a New Spring on the Activating Rod won't fix???

    Probably nothing Rick, unless of course i wanted a brake that actualy worked well. It has new shoes, and all cams were greased. Adjusted as tight as allowable.

    Somebody put a rear disc on a Turbo 650, but used the Seca 900 rear rim and bits. It required welding.

    I can lock up my back tire with my rear brake anywhere under 30 if I wanted to...

    The front should be 75% of your braking, so personally, I wouldn't bother with the swap, unless you want it for the fact of making maintenance easier... Less crap to change.

    If it didn't come with the Disc Brakes on the back; it's going to take a whole lot of work to make the swap, ... and it's not worth all the effort.

    Back Brakes are used to help slow-down.
    You don't want to lock-up the Rear Brakes.

    When the Rear Brake locks-up the Rear Wheel; the forces keeping the Bike upright are shut-down.
    You're out of control.
