Well, I took of my air box and mufflers after installing some filters to see what everybody talking about....yeah it sucks! Way to much air that is but I have new set of 2001 YZF-R1 41mm carbs sitting around and I'm ready to installed them just for kicks! Has anybody heard of or tried swapping bigger carbs?

More than likely wont work because the R1 carbs are down draft and need to run at an angle, whilst XJ carbs are horizontal mounted.

That is true, my plan is more hp and to improve throttle response—especially in the low end—all the way up to the bikes redline. Since these been rejetted for that I'm giving it a try. So far everything the same except for the choke cable that I'm gonna have to run different. I'm gonna check and see what happens and if it don't work then Plan 2: I'll make them sit right wish should be cool because the carbs will be upward facing me! If not back to stock :(

Your Maxim runs 33mm carbs (I think). Putting 41mm carbs on it won't do anything good for bottom end power.

And seriously, they won't work if they are flat because the floats will either be always open, or always closed. And I doubt you'll be able to angle them back up to the correct level because the Maxim frame and tank will be in the way.

Sell them on eBay, re-build your stock carbs or get a set of CR's
