Fuel filter

    Can somebody please let me know where to get a fuel filter for a 1981 650 Maxim? I'm looking for one with the discharge tube comes out at a 45 or 90 from the bowl.

    Check your local autoparts store. BikeBandit.com also has some with a 90 deg bend. PM Chacal he can supply then also.

    Thanks I'll check it out. Do you know if there are any links on here that show the proper install of the filter I am having problems trying to get it to sit right to where i don't get an air bubble at the top of the bowl

    I have another question. IF the filter bowl doesn't totaly fill up with fuel could it cause my bike to spit and spudder?

    Your fuel filter needs to be oriented such that any air that gets into the fuel line can easily move up the fuel line into the tank. I had one of thos 90 degree cone filter, but the only way I could place it was with the tip of the cone pointing up. Since the inlet pipe to the filter was half way down the cone, an air bubble would collect in it that was so large that it would be below the inlet to the filter. I think the surface tension in the bubble would make it hard to pass. This restricts fuel flow to the carb bowls, starving your engine of fuel. I changed to a straight through filter.

    The bubble needs to block off the inlet to restrict fuel flow. If a cone filter is oriented sideways, and has a small bubble away from the inlet or outlet, that probably won't restrict the fuel flow enough to cause the spuddering.

    Post a pic of the fuel filter in the state you mention.

    Thanks. I tried using a filter for a Honda (I know I suck) that had a 90 on it, but the way it sat I couldn't fill it and the bike really ran like crap so I put the old one back on for now, but since I redid all of the full lines for the filter now the filter is sitting too far over the carbs and it's only filling half up. Looks like I'll have to redo the lines again.

    My inline cone filter almost always has a small bubble in it. Hasn't caused a problem on my bike, at least as far as I can tell.

    The way I had the filter sitting before I redid the hoses for the Honda filter I always had a small bubble and it didn't effect anything either. Since I shortened the supply line to the filter and replaced the line to the carbs the filter is sitting more over the carbs at almost an upwards angle and only half the bowl is filling up. I'm going to redo the hoses tonight after I get the filter that's on one of the forms here.

    This is my set up.... i know its not great to look at but, function over beauty for now.
    Ive not experienced any surging or cutting out with the air bubble as of yet.
    Been running this way for a few days.

    The gas tank does not look so great on the inside and i dont want to ruin the work i did on the carbs.

    I hear you on that. I've had my carbs out a couple a years ago to change a needle and seet on #1 and let me tell you I don't want to pull them again if I don't have to. What a pain to get everything back in place.

    How did you get the fuel pipe on the petcock to face forward?!?! That should work no problem, just to anyone else who does it...make sure the are no high spots to trap air (BillB it looks like your fuel line is well routed so fuel always travels down).

    What ever you do, you don't want to trap bubbles in your fuel line. Fuel filters are a must! As for how difficult carbs are to pull...once you do it a couple of times, it's not THAT hard. It takes a while, and new, pliable airbox boots that you can stuff into the airbox helps ALOT

    I'm wondering the same thing. Also that line looks a bit close to the head.
