OK, I'm putting together "Clutches 101" and was about to take a propane torch to a plain plate to create an example of a burnt clutch plate; then I came across THIS in my boneyard:

I don't think I could possibly have created one this good.

This is without a doubt one of the most classically BURNT plates I have ever seen; a true monument to clutch abuse.

    Just thought I'd share.

I'm looking foward to reading "Clutch 101" bigfitz.
My clutch was slipping in 2nd and higher gears, but none of the plains looked like that.

Nah Fitz...you got it all wrong...That is a precision machined - bling bling clutch plate. I'm sure that melted tab is how it came for balance. Think about how cool 8) those blue drive disks look spinning around INSIDE the cover. If only there was a larger oil window...psychedelic!

Some of my drive plates were blued...if you need a little more "subtle" of a pic. I just replaced them a couple of weeks ago.

The "tab" is a feature unique to the XJ500/550/600 clutch plates, that much is normal.

I hadn't seen one THIS burnt that I can remember, at least not in a Jap bike.

Oh...I def didn't know about the tab. Good thing I don't have a 550...woulda scared the S**T out of me if I had pulled that out of my clutch and not known about the tabs.

I am also eager to see the clutches 101 thread. I just did it, but hopefully reading your thread will confirm that I did things right...and not have any DOH! moments (at least not anymore than I already had). This is def a How To the forum needs.

Hi schooter. Definitely clutch was slipping.....but gears weren't skipping.
A mate of mine had an XJ650 that used to skip out of 2nd, was a complete PITA, pulling away hard in 2nd and all of a sudden RPM at redline and no power at rear wheel at all....and everyone thinks the rider has made a poor gear change.

i still have to disagree with you. My xj700 skips in second gear, I believe these engines were shipped with a spacer in the wrong spot, that' the story i've been told, and the dogs wear for 2nd gear, and the cases need to be pulled apart to fix them, the xs and xj 1100's are notorious for them as well.

i'm sorry to say but im 99.9% sure your tranny is messed up like mine.. i would be ecstatic if my problem was my clutch

Schooter - there is no way you can confuse a slipping clutch with a missed gear. One just has the revs creeping up on you while the other shoots the revs to redline with no resistance.
