The Yamaha manual says to install the camshafts with the small hole on the camshaft facing upward. Is the manual referring to the hole next to the sprocket that is approximately 1/16" in diameter?

    Howdy jimwrixon

    86 XJ 600 700 750 or 900 ???

Did you have cams out or you just checking the timing?

On my 82 XJ 750 the marks on the cams were more like a punch mark than an actual hole. They are pretty small, located beside the #2 cyl side of the bearing cap, not the sprocket side (if that makes sense).

    Hope this helps.

The info I have on the 700X series shows the cam hole beside the timing chain sprocket above cyl # 3, to be lined up with the mark on the bearing cap above cyl # 2.
