If you are going to replace them just cut the old ones off. They are real hard to remove without breaking, but not impossible.

The way I found easiest was by blowing air into the little hole on the end with an air compressor. The grip will expand and come off. Worked great for the left side, but the throttle side was more difficult.

I agree with mlew If you are replacing easiest way is to cut them off. If you are planning on reusing them then it isnt an easy job. I have successfully twisted off the clutch side without damage. I have also used a hair dryer to heat up the grips until they were more plyable and pryed them out a little and used lighter fluid to dissolve the glue a little. Still not an easy task but it can be done.

You may need to do a little "reconfiguration" on the throttle drum to put the new grips on. Yamaha molded a bunch of lugs and ribs on the outside of the throttle drum to engage grooves inside the original grip. They will need to come off (the four big square ones at the very end) and/or be smoothed off a bit.

    Quick work with a Dremel...

BTW, the "compressed air trick" is the way to go for grip removal if you want to save them.
