so I bought my 82xj750 last week. The owner was a nice guy (I think) I am usually a good judge of character. anyway he sent me the title and it is a new one he had gotten in may 2009. He wrote a note in the envelope that said "It says 143,000 miles but that was a typo because I put a dash in front of 43,000 (possible that it was an innocent mistake as the guy did manage to spell my road wrong after I spelled it out 5x). I want to call the PPO to comfirm that the bike doenst have 143k on it, but his name isnt on the title, I do however have the number from the old title if that would help?

Typos are possible. Also, I think the mileage isn't as important as you think. Take a look at all the usual suspects for wear and tear. Replace or fix them if necessary.

In Ontario, I know we get a Used Vehicle Package that lists all of the PO's -- something like that would useful in your situation. Check your DMV :)

Honestly...I think the PPO would be very proud of a motorcycle that he could get 143k out of.

shnuffy is right, these aren't like cars - the WORST mileage numbers are the lower ones, because a bike that is ridden is a bike that is maintained. I would be more concerned with how much mileage was put on the bike recently (by the PO and when). You can't put thousands of RECENT miles on a 30 y/o bike without properly maintaining it - and the better it's maintained the less you have to fix all at once.

If you really want the mileage number to be accurate - maybe to resale purposes, I would suggest calling the RMV on it. Likely there is a way to fix it, but it will probably require notarized statements from the PO - either that or you could just declare the odo inaccurate. It's probably easier to correct a mistake like this the sooner you do it.

I don't think either of my bikes have the mileage on the title. Around here I think the cut-off is like 10 years or something like that and they don't require mileage to be stated anymore.

yea thats true. I should be happy with what I got. I got an 82' xj with next to no rust with a bunch of extras like leather saddlebags tankbags and airfilters (k an N and uni) for 400 bux. The carbs were a gummy mess but for 400bux some wd40 and some oil she will be running strong

Sounds like you got a good deal regardless of mileage!

really even with a bike thats been riding I still want to rebuild carbs. headbearings brakes etc. I rather have gotten one with 10k. why do you say that? I dont know if the PO used canola oil for engine oil KY for brake fluid and cottage cheese for fork oil ahhaha. " a bike that is ridden is a bike that is maintained" not in the Masshole lol

I want to meet the guy who averaged over 5,000 Miles a Year, for 28 consecutive years, to Clock 143,000 Miles on that Bike.

That guy , right there, is deserving of the title: King Iron Butt.

If the bike really did have 143,000 miles on it, I'd run a mile.
Gee, that guy was restless, that's done more miles than a spaceship.

I dunno if 5K a year qualifies you as an "Iron Butt." I average 5K-6K a season and have been doing it for over 40 years; just not all on one motorcycle.

The bike would simply never last until 140k without decent maintenance. It wouldn't run very far on canola oil, even "the Masshole." Post some pictures!

There is a group of guys out here called The Buffalo Soldiers. It's in their bi-laws they must clock at least 1000 miles a month no matter what. Now that's some hardcore riding right there.

Well that's especially impressive if you live in MA. The riding season isn't as short as everyone likes to think...but it surely isn't year round either.

I go to college in NV and I would ride 500 miles a week offroad and then onece a month adventure to Death Valley, Mexico etc. :( :( :( the only adventure in the masshole was a tree going through my roof. Youre neighbors will come onto youre property to tell you to stop riding at 12pm on a tuesday. Its a whole different world here I miss Vegas :(. As far as the weather man I dont care I ride to ride not to front that tough guy motorcycle image. 10deg. or 100deg. I ride. When you push yourself to the limits on an adventure it makes you feel so alive.
