Alright so as of right now the list of work on the 750 is:
    Deep Cleaning.
    New Paint
Swap out the ginormous seat for something better.
    New Fenders
    New Gauges
    New Headlight.
Put exhaust on instead of just headers.
    LED light conversion.

There will be more to follow but thats about what I am lookin at when I get home in a month.

You're lucky...the collector is there...it's not just headers. All you ned are the mufflers, and they should only affect the sound - collectors are supposed to be the important thing for turning. There are some threads on adapting Sporster mufflers, due to their availablity.

What do you know about how it's been maintained? "Normal" maintanence on any of these bikes that sit for a while include:

Compression Test - Valve clearance check
Cleaning carbs and replacing seals (to keep from dealing with air leaks and tuning issues down the road)
Front Brake renovation (at least brake fluid, but consider rebuilding calipers, master cylinder, replace brake lines)
    Rear Brake shoes
    Lube cables
    check charging system
    new tires
...among other things. You get these things done...as well as the things you are daydreaming about and this bike will be all YOURS and will ride like ALMOST brand new

Looks like the bags are on backwards. Are you going to ditch them?

No matter what I am going to do all of the above. Never worked on these before but I know some guys plus what I have been reading up on the forums here. From what I understand the bike was basically given "minimum maint" Which is not uncommon from what I have heard about most PO's She will be a project and well worth it I hope.

Well at the very least it LOOKS pretty clean :D

As for being worth it...unless an XJ's got a blown motor...you'd be hard pressed to find ANYONE on this forum who doesn't think it's worth it. I've been riding my XJ750 Seca for about a month since I restored it. It still needs a few things, but it's a BLAST to ride. All the info to do the maintenance is on this site, chacal provides just about all the parts you need, and you're buddies helping you should basically insure that you'll have a great time with it.

Anybody know of any good websites to find LED turn signals and brake lights? Also anyplace to get custom fenders for a reasonable price. (I am NOT spending $780 for a rear fender)

Dude your bike looks great. Take the seat off, put it the living room so you and your girl can cuddle, then come pick up my seat for free and put it on your bike so no one else ever to look at that thing again.

Thanks Butch. You got a seat? For some reason my wife kind of likes the big seat... I told her not to get used to it and if she really wanted it I would save it from the knife. But that will only happen if I can find another seat haha.

Alright small update here. I just got back from my year in Iraq. Now I can finally work on the Maxim a bit. Got the primer done on the tank and side covers today and now I am going to pick up the new Rush Performance Sportster pipes!! Anything I have to do to make them match up with the Maxim, other than figure out a mounting bracket?

How are you laying the Gloss down? I would suggest a real spray job over a rattle can. Just got done with my first re-spray and it tuned out great!

Thanks for your service and good luck on the bike!

Goin with rattle can for now, it is a temporary job until I get the professional job done. I am almost done with painting the tank and I am about 70% happy with it, so yeah can't wait til I have the funds to get it done for good.

Ok so just got back from the vacation excited to work on the bike reconnected everything went to start it and..... nothing, it would click but nothing else. So I figured battery may be low and connected the charger for awhile.. came back out to try again and now there is nothing at all, no clicks or anything. What could have gone wrong between the first try and the 2nd? Thanks for any help guys.

Alright should have some updates on the maxim here SOON. Hopefully will start work on it next week. Its been a crazy winter which has taken away ALL of my long awaited bike time in the garage. Gotta have her ready before the weather gets nice enough to actually ride

Ok so I have decided that stupid people should not be allowed to work on motorcycles... When I purchased the bike I knew it had a small gas leak right below the tank. Whoever owned it before mehad decided a great fix to this was to throw a big glob of rubber glue and the hose comng from the tank. Amazingly there is still a leak. I ripped off the glue and tightened up the screws that were hidden by it and BAM whadya know the leak is gone.

But aside from that I got new spark plugs put in checked all my wiring and connections, and vroom she roars to life like never before.

Go to Dennis Kirk website for all your LED lights and fender needs. Also look thru their Harley catolog for a better selection of fender styles.

Well getting some more work done on my wonderful Maxim I decided that at least the first good carb cleaning will be done by the pros. And much to my excitment and joy the local yamaha shop by my house will clean and rebuild my carbs for the amazing price of only $100, gotta love small towns and the way they treat people. Plus all the mechanics in the shop are excited about anything "custom" I wanna do and will do what they can to give on the site advice.

I don't even have a local Yamaha dealer. The closest one is an hour away in Joilet, IL.

I did visit one in Lowel, IN once. The older salesman was nice and showed me his older bikes he had in the service area. That place MIGHT be able/willing but no idea about price...

He is lucky to have a yamaha dealer to go to that really cares and is willing to work on older bikes. Most of the dealers i have delt with for parts don't give a darn about you and will not work on anything older then a 95.

Project is turning out well good luck with it.

Thanks for the well wishes. I have probably hit a stall point in work on the bike seeing as how military pay is slashed.

I to am having to endure the slow passage of time before I can start rehabbing; first I am moving, in the process of packing(UUUUGH); I'm pushing 55 and this #%@&#@ ain't easy. Every time I take a packed box to the garage, I waste valuable time just staring at my Maxim, dreaming of the day I can finally take her for a spin. I guess I am one of the "purist's", in other words I want my Max to be just the way Yamaha sold it. I am glad we live in a country where it's ok to butcher a fine old bike to suit that owners taste, maybe it's my aged thinking, there's just a certain number of these frames still around. If the trend continues, in 10 or 20 years there won't be any frame that haven't been ravaged by these mod squads. On the other hand there aren't that many occasions to need to replace a frame. Well, it's back to packin'

My 550 came with the same seat you started with. Squishy, but way too much. I got that bad boy shaved down and it's so sleek now. Much better-looking.
