Hello all! I bought an 82 XJ650 Maxim back in March and have been slowly getting her up and running. I'm have a few wiring issues though. My bike will start every once in a while with the start button, but sometimes it just clicks and the oil level light illuminates. I check my oil level every time and it is just right so i end up push starting it. Any ideas? Also, my tail light constantly stays on and barely get brighter when i apply the brakes. I have a wiring diagram that my local cycle shop printed off for me and i had my mom blow it up 4x bigger, just don't know where to start. Any ideas are appreciated.

Is the clicking coming from somewhere by the battery? And is it a single click, or a repeated click-click-click?...

Kinda sounds like the starter solenoid is on its way out.

+1 on the starer solenoid, replace it.
For your brake lights clean or replace the brake light switches. Check the ground connection in the tail light first.

I was thinking it was probably the solenoid because the click-click-click is coming from right there. I've been looking on ebay for a new one. Seems like they're running anywhere from 20 to 40 bucks. Here in an hour or so when my driveway gets some shade i'll go out there and check that ground connection on the tail light. Thanks for the quick responses!
