    Hello
I just got my Motion Pro 08-0020

VALVE SHIM TOOL YAM, replaces YM-01245

In the mail yesterday as I decided to do the valve adjustment myself instead of paying someone $175 plus shims.

Well the shim tool dose not seem to do anything. I can install it and rotate the cam and the bucket will still come up all the way and the valve clearance dose not even change. I tried several times to reposition the tool and the slot is on the opposite side of the tool. What am I doing wrong? Is the tool the right one?

Do you have the little tab pointed down to hold the edge of the bucket down?

Do you have the shim tool bolted down tight enough so that the bucket doesn't push it up?

Yes it seems to be in correct and tight but not deep enough to do anything but put some pressure on the bucket so I cant spin it freely. But I get the same .004 reading with the tool installed and the cam rotated upward.
How much clearance should the tool give you?

Make sure you have the turned the bucket so the notch is visible. When you use the tool, it needs to be installed on the outside edge of the head, with gasket removed and centered on the cam lobe. Turn the cam lobe all the way down, install the tool, push it up tight against the cam lobe and tighten the bolt. Rotate the cam away from the bottom of the tool unti it's almost vertical, Do NOT let i t touch the tool. It should give you 3 - 4mm enough to get the shim out. I use a pick and forceps to remove the shim.

i found that i had to hold the tool in place with my thumb while rotating the cam away from it. even when it was as tight as i was comfortable tightening it, it still wanted to slide out of the way - unless i pressed on it with my thumb.

This is the tricky part. Gotta be snug against the cam, it doesn't have to move much to miss the bucket. It's especially tricky on the ones where tightening the bolt on the tool tends to pull it away from the cam.

Okay guys I got the hang of it now. Thanks for the how to lessons.

I am having trouble getting the shims out. I got the one on the intake that needed to be looked at. But I think I need forceps to get the exhaust ones out. I have been trying everything I can think of that I have in the house but failed with the tweezers and my assortment of needle nosed pliers.

    Frustrating

Now I know I need a 265mm for my one bad intake.

Where can I trade my shims for the ones I need?

There are many opinions on installing used shims or putting new ones in. I personally would go with new and keep the old ones for checking purposes.
If you look close you'll see a wear pattern (ring) on your old shim. The cams don't like different wear patterns and could cause problems down the road.
