I'm looking to buy some universal carb to head boots, since the ones I would normally buy from PartsNMore are out of stock and have been for the last year or so. Does anyone have any experience with these? I was told that I would have to put vacuum stems on them using valve stems.

I don't have experience with those. Have you checked eBay? I found some XJ550 intake manifold boots there for < $100 (set of four!) and they were perfect, with vacuum stems and gaskets.

Are they worn out or just hard as a rock?

I've heard that radiator hose works well as a boot replacement. It withstands the heat.
