    Hey guys,

I have a 1985 XJ700N and after fixing one carb problem have run into another. It seems that my carbs are still leaking fuel (between number 2 and 3) and it's not coming from the fuel rail. My only guess is that the o-ring next to the syncing screws gave out. I would like to replace all rubber on the carbs this Saturday but do not want to spend $20 per carb. Does anyone know where I can just buy the o-rings and gaskets for the carbs? I do not need the float needle or seat that usually comes with these kits.

    Thanks.

PM Chacal. If he doesn't have them, they're not available.

im curious the oring by the sync screw? or are you talking about the mixture screw. you shouldnt have any gas leaking from the carbs unless something is wrong with your float level. just trying to figure out what your talking about i dont know of an oring lower then the float level unless yours has orings on the drain screws

    Agreed.

If gas is spilling out anywhere except the drain screw the fuel level is too high.

All those seals are to keep air out, not gasoline in.

Evaluate the condition of the Petcock and the Petcock Fuel Settings.

    1. Make sure you are not in PRI = PRIME = Fuel Supply ON.
    >>Set Petcock to FUEL. Look for faint Arrow on Petcock Lever.
    >>Point the Arrow to FUEL.<<

    2. TEST Petcock for Leaking Condition.
    >>Disconnect Fuel Hose from Petcock to Carbs. Run a hose from the Petcock to a Collection Jug.
    >>When Petcock is set to FUEL and the Engine is Not Running; there should be NO Gas coming from the Tank through the Petcock.

    3. TEST Petcock Vacuum Function.
    >> Attach Vacuum Line to the Petcock. Place loose end to your lips and draw a vacuum.
a,) Fuel should FLOW under Vacuum.
b,) Fuel should STOP when there is NO Vacuum.

    If Petcock LEAKS:
    1,) Replace Petcock. Easy. Recommended.
2.) Rebuild Petcock. Work. Might get fixed. Might not.

If you have more drawers of tools than you do of clothes, socks and underware, ... by all means ... purchase a repair kit and follow the step by step method illustrated in our full-length Documentary done about rehabilitating Fuel Valves.

I prefer the anticipation of it's arrival in the Mail; and the excitement of unwrapping and opening the package of a Brand NEW Petcock.

I treat Petcocks like Timex watches.
They're great when they are keeping time, ... perfectly!
But, when it goes bad, ... you don't bring-it-in to get it fixed.

Thanks for all the responses! So, a run down of what went wrong and see if anyone has an idea. I had a fuel leak from the fuel t-junction between carbs 2 and 3. I took the carbs out and replaced that piece. Bike ran fine for about two weeks and then the carbs started dripping fuel between carbs 3 and 4 (the carbs that are physically higher when the bike is on the stand). I've looked at the carbs and the fuel rail at that point is not wet. The wetness seems to be ABOVE the top of the bowls. I do NOT know exactly what the problem is, but I suspected the o-rings near the sync screws because that is the only thing around the same height. I did notice however that my petcock went bad at the same time. When I took the tank off it began leaking from the seals. Now I would think that that would cause a leak down the fuel line and then between carbs two and three but not three and four. Any ideas?

    Yes.

Blow some Baby Powder all-over the area where you suspect it's leaking.
Pinpoint the source of the Leak.

Until we know exactly what the score is, ... buy a Briggs & Stratton Plastic Fuel Shut-off and install it next to the Petcock and use it to SHUT-OFF the GAS from flooding the Bike and causing a fire hazard.

Buy the Insurance Valve, ... $10.99 ... EZ to install.
