I ended up buying a Seca 400 off Craigslist.. Paid him $700 and he handed over the clean title. (http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/1714731801.html) I went to check it out, and it turns out it's not an 81, which was a anemic SOHC, it's actually an 82, with a much more potent DOHC and YICS. Two BattleAxe tires with less than 300 miles, sprockets and chain 1000 miles ago, good brakes, spins like a top. New seat cover, new fork seals, new triple tree bearings, new battery, new grips. He painted it while he was off work from hurricane Ike, and sealed the tank while he was at it. I'm really pleased with the paint work. He picked up good automotive paint in custom rattle cans. Painted it pretty close to the factory color with a fine metal flake, but left the matte finish instead of doing a final fine sand and clear coat. What you're left with is a matte pearl finish - the metal flake adds a really thick shine - not mirror reflective, more thick and chunky. Overall, pretty close to turn key, really. A little surface rust on the exhaust, but I couldn't find any other. The only issue is the front master cylinder, which works great, but was sourced off of an enduro bike. It has the mirror socket, but nowhere to plug in the brake light wire. I'm either going to need to figure out a work-around, or find a different master cylinder.

Only complaint, it's kinda' quiet. I'd like to put some mufflers on there that will give me a little more noise. I'm not really looking for any performance increase, mainly because I don't feel like rejetting and everything else - I just want it to be a little, or a lot, louder. Any suggestions?

    Ooooh... jealous now..... :)

    All the Seca/Maxim 400's are DOHC, ...

Nice find, a lot fewer around than the Max......

try buying those cheap turnouts for smaller ehausts, they're like 7-10 bucks tops apiece.. as long as those bikes have a collector box you shouldn't have to worry about running lean

I don't like too much attention from the boys in blue! Keep the fitted silencers.

    Congrats!
That was the one with the Tach not working. Sounded like it didn't need much at all. Most had already been taken care of.

The other was mine which is still up ForSale BTW :) .

no collector, gonna hafta drill the endcaps for more sound. pretty simple. go to dennis kirk online and buy a pressure switch that goes inline of the brake MC. Like $10 or less. or just use the rear when you squeeze the front like you should be anyways...

Nice and clean. I wish I had the up-swept cans... I've got straight-back boring old megaphones. :(

Will drilling the end caps hose up my back pressure?

So, I've been searching around, and I've found some people saying that I just need to drill a few 1/4 inch holes in the actual endcap, and others saying I need to get an 18 inch extension and punch some holes in the baffles. Can you shed some light on this?

At idle, yes. Screaming from 4k - 10k rpm? Not so much. ^^
I'm surprised you find it quiet. Mine was plenty loud before I wrapped the baffle. Different cans mind you. You could try just drilling out the rivets and removing the baffle entirely, trying that out. If you like that sound you could cut off the baffles from the endcaps, that sound should be all that different. If it's still too quiet though, you may want to (replace battery in)/(turn up) your hearing aid....
