I want to paint my stock chrome fenders. What suggestions do you guys have for painting over that chrome.. I have access to a spray booth etc but all the prep has to be done by me. Thanks in advance.

Rough up the chrome with some 220 sand paper, clean, prime, and paint.

Aren't you suppose to use some metal etch primer to paint over chrome? Or is that just for re-chroming?

I use a metal etching primer anytime I am priming bare metal, including prepped chrome. Always has worked well for me.

If you have access to a sandblaster it will rough the surface up much better than sandpaper. I'd still use an etching primer on it too.

Take your fender to a bumper shop. They can strip the chrome off.

I hit mine with a DA sander using 220. Then hand sanded with some 400 to smooth out a few spots. I used a regular auto primer. As long as u rough it up good enough and take the shine out of the chrome it will stick fine and then paint away, but I also wiped mine down with paint prep before primer and paint after sanding to make sure I get rid of anything that might contaminate the finish.

i agree with you even tho you sand the heck out of it it still doesnt stick as well as regular metal it seems like it chips easier the more of it you can get off the better . ive always found the paint looks better when painted over chrome just doesnt stay on as good

sand it first with 100 grit. I know it sounds excessive, but if you dont it will chip.

100 grit, then 220, then prime it heavy, wet sand with 600 until its perfectly smooth if there are any imperfections. Paint it. Wet sand with 600 again, clear it then color sand it with 1500 grit, wet sand it with 3000 and then buff it out.

Even if you do this with Duplicolor spray bombs it will stick and if its allowed to fully cure before you mount it it should hold up much like factory paint.

Make sure you get through ALL of the chrome. If its still has a shine to it, IT WILL NOT HOLD PAINT!
