Just wanted to say thanks to the forum. I did a lot of searching and reading to avoid any common mistakes before working on my bike.

This weekend I successfully adjusted my rear brake lever and even had to trouble shoot and reconnect the brake light sensor that came off the lever. I put on new after market grips (ProGrip 862..I think) even though there was a small chunk out of the throttle sleeve I knew how to shave off the ridges and use some hairspray thanks to the forum. I also put on new, taller mirrors fully aware of the reverse thread on the right controls thanks again to the forum.

I know it may not seem like much to many of you but for me having almost no mechanical experience it was a big step. Up next weekend is to tighten my chain and replace the rubber on my front foot pegs now that I've got an actual Yamaha service manual.

Glad to hear you had the where-with-all to do some research. As in many cases, the information to avoid catastrophe is usually available if folks would bother to look. You owe your early successes to your efforts as much as to the forum. Getting a factory manual is also a stroke of brilliance, you are destined for great things at this rate...

Hey Rural! thats great and I know the feeling! I bought the progrip 862's and could not see how they'd fit on the bike (too much of the grip hanging off the bars...no room to move mirror or master cyl housing) so went with something more basic. Would love to see a pic of them on the Maxim! The Manual is surely a must have...I'm no expert, but only a short ride away and would be glad to come out some night if you want another set of eyes :D

Wait...REVERSE thread on the right hand controls? Musta missed that post! The threads on it were stripped to sheit from the PO, so had to use some steel epoxy to mount my mirrors which I'm incidentally looking to now REMOVE for some bar end mirrors :)

    Hey,

I just left the little bit dangle of the end. About half an inch or so sticks out past the bars on the left. Throttle side very little seems to be floating off the bar as I didn't cut off the 4 square boxes on the end of the throttle sleeve (1 was broken off anyway) I simply shaved the top of them down so I kept the length.

Yeah I had read here somewhere they were reverse so I was sure to get an adapter when I ordered my new mirrors.

I'll likely be taking you up on your offer to be an extra set of eyes once we get to the winter. The bike runs great right now so I'm not messing with it but I will be looking to do lots of preventive work come the winter. Hopefully once I've moved to a place with a bigger garage or work shed.

I can't get the pick to up load to my gallery right now but I'll try to update once I get one on.

That sucks about all the work to get your mirrors on, mine took less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the kind words Robert. I've found searching the forum ahead of time is quicker than waiting for a reply and twiddling my thumbs. What a huge resource this site is.

    Mike

And I'm really enjoying it. I think it was a good choice for a first bike. I find it powerful enough to get me moving and keep up on the highways. I have no comparison of course but I'm happy with the way it takes curves. With the light weight and lower power I've felt comfortable at all times, even the few when I've been a little over confident or have slid on some gravel or tar and have quickly regained control.
