i know this will vary based on location but i am looking at things in general. does anyone know what steps may be taken to get a vin and title for a "homemade" bike. myslef and a buddy are kicking around the idea of just doing our very own frame. any info on the matter will be helpful.

Call your local motor vehicle departement, they will point you in the right direction. Here in NC I would have to take it to a DMV officer and they will inspect the vehicle and issue a VIN number and stamp it on the frame. Then give me a title

I built a ground up custom on an aftermarket frame in the 70s in Maryland. I had to take the finished bike (chopper with 18" over springer front end) to the DMV. They inspected it and gave me a serial number plate to attach to the frame. Then they issued a title based on that serial number. Good luck.

DMV will have a sheet for you that has all the specs required for passing safety inspection, too. they will also have forms for you to fill out and info needed in order to register and title a homemade or custom made bike, car, truck, other types of vehicles, etc.........

idaho is the same as north carolina, you take the frame/finished bike to the dmv and they inspect it for safety issues, then they issue a vin number as a sticker
