A common cause, if this suddenly happened, is a carb needle and seat, along with a slightly faulty petcock are allowing some gas into your crankcase. This then thins your oil, and blows into the airbox.

Check your oil level, test-flow the petcock disconnected, using mouth suction, check your carb float levels, if you can. (drain screws not stuck.)

I did notice that the petcock is weeping now, guess I need to rebuild it. I have been noticing a heavy smell of gas around the bike lately so that must be it. Thanks

Check the rear of the tank both sides while you're at it! They usuallly rust there because any water in the tank sinks to the bottom/rear and sits there because its lower that the petcock!

Chacal can supply all the petcock parts you need

I tried to rebuild a few Petcocks using aftermarket kits.
    They leaked.

You need a Replacement Kit from the Manufacturer with a special bevel-edged O-ring.

According to what the Manufacturer said to me when we investigated the possibility of a Bulk Purchase of Repair Kits from them, ... the Company spokesman said:

OEM Kits are only available through a Yamaha Dealers, to whom they are contractually obliged with to be the sole outlet for their Vacuum Petcock Repair Kits.

You might be able to secure a Petcock Rebuild Kit from elsewhere other than a Dealership.

You're likely to be buying a snap-shot of a grinning lady.
    Not the Mona Lisa.

    Caveat emptor.

mmmm do I deduce from this that you consider Len's kit not worth buying??

I presume you are very familiar with the link I posted therefore I thought you would appreciate that a leak may be down to a variety of reasons - not necessarily just the old bevel edged o ring issue...

    No.
He says that he supplies Kits from the Manufacturer.
He says his are The Real McCoy, ... the Genuine Article.

I don't think it's worth the time and energy to rebuild the Petcock with there being any chance that you've spent the money and took all the time, ... just to have the Kit leak worse than the tired old Petcock.

It does seem to me that investing in a New Petcock is a much easier solution.

The Original serviced you well for nearly 30-years.

    Get a New one.
    No muss. No fuss. Guaranteed.
Once you're back-in-action on the new Petcock, ...
You'll have nearly 30-years to fool-around rebuilding the old one.

you can turn your petcock into a simple on-off job with a small amount of epoxy putty, reclaim control.

Just as we have all Modified our Bikes with:
    Fuse Panels.
Because the Original justs "Gives-up the Ghost" and fails.

    Inline Fuel Filters.
Because the effects of aging cannot stalled and we don't want to have to pull Carbs for suspended particulate in the Fuel.

It might be a wise idea to install a Fuel Shut-Off Valve just after the Petcock.
If there is one sad story that is repeated more often than others; we hear about a Petcock that has leaked filling a Members Crankcase with Gas.

As inexpensive as they are, ... and as easy as they are to install and virtually conceal, ... The "Straight-through Briggs and Stratton Fuel Shut-Off Valve" ... is worth its weight in Gold.

Horror stories of fuel leaking into the crankcase??

Yup, I inadvertently left the petcock on PRIME on an XS400 a few months ago. I went to get it last week--had an odd smell in the storage area, it reeked of gas--hmmm. Sho-nuff, crankcase full up, overflowed the carbs, airbox, FLOOR, etc.......grrrr. But hey, at least I know the engine will be nice and clean once the new oil is in it!

    Secondary shut-off valve?

Yup, got one on an xj700, only I used one that was and extra take-off from a snowmobile that I parted out. Can't hide it like the B/S, but it works just as welll.

    Fuse box?

    Nope, ain't done none o' them......................yet.

    Dave
