My bike(1983 Maxim 550) has been sitting about a year. Started it and the starter stays engaged when running & I am wondering what is causing this. Any help would be appreciated ! Thanks

Is your starter button sticking? A little graphite lube will fix it if that is what is happening.

Starter solenoid welded closed is another possibility. Hit it with the plastic end of a screwdriver the next time it happens. If the starter stops, replace the solenoid.

had the same problem with my '81 xj550 maxim. Opened up the control switch and found corrosion and rust. Ended up replacing the whole control ( I didn't have a kill switch either)

you opened up the right hand control and that looked good?

What happens when you start the bike, turn off the key and then back on again. Is the bike off or does it start w/o pressing the ignition button? If yes i believe the problem is in the ignition wiring/main fuse line, not the solenoid/starter
