Alright this is my first post but I'm in need of some help!!! I have just had my bike for a few months now and decided I would do a little maintenance and change the oil.

I was trying to take the bolt of the oil filter cover when the bugger broke on me. Yes i was turning the bolt the wrong way

Anyways I need this part BAAAAAD because what i can find on ebay is going to take 2 weeks to ship and I don't think I can wait that long.

I know there are some Yamaha masters on here for the XJ's so maybe someone would know where to find this part for my XS?!??!

Thank you in advance and if anymore info is needed please let me know!

Maybe I will make a bit more sense with pics because i wasn't that clear in my first post. This is what broke and I believe it's called the oil filter cover..? I'm thinking I can just replace this piece and start over...??

I'm just hoping someone rings in here with one I can buy locally or not...anything under a week or so would be great!! cross my fingers...

The link in my first post will definitely have the parts and you can pay for priority shipping and get it w/in 3-5 days.

Now that you have it broken, a lot of people recommend buying an adapter kit so that you ditch this set up and move to screw on oil filters, just like a car has. There are some threads about how to do this and it seems relatively easy. I have never done it myself.

I'm waiting on parts too right now. I haven't ridden in 2.5 weeks. I'm going crazy!

Hey OTStorm I appreciate the help and advice. I do not see anything listed for my bike (1984 xs 400) in that catalog unless some of the items listed for the bigger bikes would fit.

I really like that idea of the spin on filter though but am really just looking to get the bike running again!

Damn. What you can do is private message chacal, the guy who posted that store. Maybe he has something laying around...all I can say after that is good luck

Thank you I have messaged him and hope everything will be good.

I should have just let my buddy, the previous owner, guide me through this but i wanted to get it done tonight instead of tomorrow

For future reference, there ARE reverse-threaded bolts and nuts in use on the bike, your right-hand mirror (if stock) is one of them.

Anything reverse-threaded is generally marked by "nicks" on the points of the hex, otherwise righty-tightie leftie-loosey.

If chacal doesn't have one, there should be at least one or two bike salvage yards in the Vancouver area I would think.

OTS, the spin-on kit won't work on the 400s, the oil filter is on the bottom of the motor not the front like the 4-cyl bikes.

Bigfitz thank you. I am really inexperienced at all this but I definatley learned a lesson the hard way.

I was also trying to picture my bike with the spin on oil filter hanging off the bottom of the engine and seemed a little strange.

Still haven't found my part except for one on Ebay for a 1982 which I think will fit but not sure about compatibility issues and don't want to throw $70 away.

Called my local Yamaha dealers and it would take 2-4 weeks for part to arrive from Japan :(

Sure hope I can locate one faster than that!

I have ordered this part form a 1982 maxim 400 on ebay. It appears to me to be the exact same thing other then mine has "s-1" and this one has "s-2" written on it.

Would anybody know if they are the same and compatible. I sure hope they are!

    They're the same, you're good.

One more note: That "1.5 kg-m" cast into the cover on the outside-- that's the torque spec, which converts to 10.58 ft/lb (11 ft/lb is fine.)

That's not super tight; use a torque wrench to prevent future mishaps.

    Still waiting...

Georgia -> Vancouver via USPS not so fast apparently.

Hopefully I didn't damage anything else and it bolts right in!

Hey just wanted to say thank you guys for your help. My part arrived, changed the oil, and now am happy :)

Very smooth shifting with fresh oil in it and the pickup is noticeably smoother as well!

    Thanx again!
