gas tank options

    anyone aware of any bigger gas tanks that will fit the maxim 650. preferably yamaha tanks so i can keep the name brand. LOL

    in looking at the xj1100. it's the same 3.4 gallon tank. but the xs1100 says 6.3 gallons.

    at 80 mph i'm only getting about 36 mpg. so 3.4 gallons isn't a lot of distance and the group rides around here go on 100 mile stretches between gas. that's pushing my limits.

    my only option is to pack a gas container with me. and with all the wrecks going on lately with the cell phone use in cars. that increases my chances of blowing up. so i'm not too hip on that idea.

    I was looking through the posts on here and seen you didn't get any replies to yours. To the best of my knowledge if you want a bigger tank about the only one that will fit directly without mods you would be looking at an xj750 tank. They have an extra gallon capacity. I put one on my 650 and really like that extra gallon and in my opinion looks better than the stock 650 tank. Hope that helps!

    4.76 gallons. that be perfect. thanks for the tip. now to find one in good shape for a decent price.

    the XJ750 Maxim tank (not the canadian xj750 from 85/6 though, the earlier XJ750 tank)is a direct replacement. I put one on my 650 several years back, and it sure is nice to go 130-140 mi before switching to reserve! Pic is in the gallery, too.

    it's amazing how the new speed limit decreases the mileage dramatcially. my 82 went 150 miles before hitting reserve. back in 84 when the speed limit was 55. with the stock 3.4 gallon tank.

    i'm pushing 90 before reserve with the 1981 i got now. but it's been all highway. i have no idea what it does around the city.

    Well, I have mine set to run just a hair rich.....rather run rich and run for ever than to run lean w/ all the power in the world and incredible mpg only to burn up and engine. Also, I have a full windjammer fairing complete with lowers, crash bars, pegs, detachable trunk and mount, detachable sidebags w/mounts, w/ raingear always on board, and usually other stuff in the bags. So, I'm totin' a fair amount of extra weight, as well. I won't complain.
