I have an 82 650 maxim and the bike won't start. When I push the start button the oil light comes on. I tried jumping the starter by cross connecting, it turns over but will not fire. Also my bike is stuck in gear, as if the tranny is frozen, gear lever will not move.
I bought this bike 2 years ago for $200 as a project bike, when I looked at it the guy jumped the bike and it started up but did not stay running. The bike also had some cosmetic problems as it was dropped on the right side, but I have since taken care of those.
I have bought a new tank, and a new starter switch, as well as a new instrument cluster (well used off of ebay)
    Any advice would be great!!
    Thank you

I would start off by pulling the plugs and checking all of them for spark. When you pull them, do they have fuel on them (they will be wet and smell of fuel). If not, you don't have fuel making it's way into the combustion chamber = carbs/fuel delivery problem. If they are wet, you most likely have an ignition problem.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Have a fire extinguisher handy for the next step!!!
Check for spark, put the now removed spark plugs back into the ignition wires and lay the plugs up on the valve/cam cover, toward the front of the engine. DO NOT let the spark plugs near the spark plug hole when performing this test! Turn the engine over and watch the spark dance across all 4 plugs. If no spark, you have to chase the voltage back up the ignition stream. I once got a nice Max cheap because of a pinched kill switch wire after the P.O. dropped the bike on the right side. You might be just as lucky. Good luck and let us know what you find.

If its stuck in gear, did you try and rock the bike back and forth with the clutch in while moving the gear shifter?

Nisom, you bring up a good point. I don't have the schematic for that model/size bike but I'll bet it has the side stand switch. I'm working with my recollections of my 81 650 which does not have that circuit. It may well be that the solenoid is keeping the ignition voltage from making it over to the ignition system via the starting circuit cut-off relay.
Pj2crazy, you will need to get your multimeter out and check both the starter button circuit and see if the solenoid is getting voltage when you press the starter button. If not, you have a bit of electrical troubleshooting to do. But fear not, we are at hand to help you through the rough spots.
    Press on!
Handyman, the engine isn't seized, Pj2 has spun it over already. It is possible the clutch pack is seized up from sitting. Locking up the tranny and rocking the bike is a great idea to try and break them free. A fresh oil change (with a little Marvel Mystery Oil) wouldn't hurt either.

Hey guys, I will try what you have suggested, and Nisom I must clear something up, I am not a he, I am a she.
And yes Robert it does have an interlock safety switch on the stand, I was wondering if this could be the cause as well. I was also wanting to know why when I push the starter button the oil light comes on?? It has oil. Any clue?
And thank you Robert for saying that you guys are here for a helping hand, I do appreciate it!!

not only does it have a side stand switch unless its out of gear the neutral switch and the clutch has to be in. if the shifter doesnt move after turning it over. it has nothing to do with the clutch if the shifter is stuck up or down thats probbibly why it doesnt turn over motor thinks its in gear i believe the black and white wire coming from the tci snip it i believe thats the wire that controls all your safety equipt leave enough room to hook it back up in case one of the safetys isnt the problem. i will look in the manual and see what the problem might be with the shifter

I'm not sure I'd cut anything on the harness. It is rather easy to remove connector contacts with a small jeweler's screwdriver leaving an easy way to put things back together.
