if that's the fuel strainer you intend to use i don't think it matters what cleaner you use as you are likely to get some floaties past the petcock (what happened ot the strainer?)....
anyhow, i think that carb cleaner is not so good for plastic...i'd use some gas and maybe an old soft toothbrush.
just my .01 (i gotta keep the other .01)

I've found just light air pressure and gasoline from the opposite direction of gas flow in the mesh has worked the best for me. otherwise removing the rubber and plastic pieces, then carb cleaner is great!

That Filter Tower is damaged and about ready to fall-out of the Petcock.

Take it the rest of the way out and look for debris.

If you plan on reusing that Petcock you should fabricate a new Filter Screen around the Filter Tower.

Visit a High-end Hobby Shop or Model Railroad Store and get a small sheet of Very-fine Screen Material.

Have someone who can sew make a little screen overcoat for the broken tower.
You supply the tailor with strands of Copper wire from a lamp cord or something.

Wrap the bottom of the overcoat tightly with several winds of wire and twist it from unraveling ...

Maybe you should invest in a NEW Petcock! : ))

Cant beat that with a stick.

    New Tower Screen; please!

Even with the Tower s the first line of defense.
Back it up with a quality inline filter.

Re: Whats the best thing to use to clean the screen and petc

Thnks folks and rick for good suggestions..I do have a inline see thru filter and one day while i had some starting issue when i turned to prime i see no fuel was flowing thru. Upon shaking the bikes tank(full ) the gas was flowing..Rebuilding is what it needs..Also i wish i had a snake camera or something ..like they use in human body exam(??) to view the inside bottom end of tank for debris etc.
