Finally figured i'd snap a couple pictures of my 550 maxim. its finally running really well and getting to about how i want it to look. i plan on doing a chop on the seat to make it a solo and removing the grab bar and compartment from the back, maybe making a new fender for the rear.

here it is the day i got it:

Great looking bike! I like the look of those bars but I have no idea what it would do to how it would ride day to day.

nice. id idn't know the 550's were chain.

i'd like to do the handle bars AND forward controls. but the kits are too expensive if they can be found still.

i'm thinking of selling this week anyways. look for something newer.

Great bike! We must think the same way. I painted mine grey as well and could also not find side cover decals. However, you can buy new Yamaha tank decals from a place called Reproduction Decals in London, Canada if didn't know already.

If you have a rusty tank I would recommend Por15 - great non toxic stuff!

My bike reqires a valve adjustment and should be on the road soon. I will post photos when I have a chance.

    Cheers

thanks for the good feedback! i love the way the handlebars feel. im in a "sportier" riding position if that makes sense, and i haven't noticed any greater hand fatigue than with stock, same with my back. i got the handle bars off ebay. they're called "drag" bars, mine are off some guys cb or kz i can't remember.

i actually got the bike without the side panel decals, although i think it looks better without them. thanks for the heads up on the tank decal, i know chacal sells them but its like 30 bux so i'm not sure if its worth it. it fell off one day while riding to work, i was really mad. i thought the bike was a little over badged to begin with so i'm thinking about taking the other one off and bondo'ing over it and repainting the tank. i really want to paint it black, but i also dig the gray. i feel like gray would stand out more, there's already so many black bikes out there.

Nice looking 550 for sure lopezfr2, where did you source the bar raisers?
I bet you would feel more comfortable with a set for forward controls with the drag bars on.

Can anyone tell how a bike is running by the look of the exhaust pipe?
lopezfr2's No4 pipe is very blue, could it be running too lean on that cylinder?

the discoloration on that pipe happened before i got it, its since had a carb clean, sync, colortune, and valves adjusted so its running fine now. ive been wanting to replace that pipe since its also dented at the top if you look closely
