Thank you for everyones help so far. Here's where I stand. 82 xj650. the bike ran fine when I took it a part... It's wired correctly and the safes are in the right spot because I never touched them. The battery is full charge. I turn on the key and the oil light comes on (like normal) It's in neutral, but the neutral light does not come on. (the light works when I hook it up to a power source, so it;s not the bulb) when I pull in the clutch, i can hear a clicking sound (so I'm assuming the clutch system works). then I push the start bottom, the oil light dims until I let out the button. no start.. no sounds...

Oil light should not come on until you push the start button. You're either low on oil or wired incorrectly.

Neutral switch grounds the neutral light circuit. If you're getting it to light by putting + to it it's not getting power from the ignition switch.

there is no oil in it. I just need to hear it turn over so I can start fabrication. It's not in a position to ride, just need to get it wired first. yes for whatever reason then, the oil light has always come on with the key? then shuts off with pressure.

It's not an oil pressure sender, it's an oil level switch. It completes the circuit if there is too little oil in the pan.

The start button also completes the oil level circuit as a lamp test.

If you have a POWER Relay

    [+] -/\- [+]
    ..............
    [-] ----- [-]

    Plugged-in to the Wiring Harness
    where the SAFETY Relay

    [-] -/\- [+]
    ..............
    [-] ---- [+]

Belongs ... the "OK TO Start" Signals
    get all screwed-up.

Remove the Relay you have in the position where the SAFETY Relay belongs.

When the RELAY is removed, ...
The Bike should Start with the Transmission in NEUTRAL.
If the Bike does NOT Start ...
    TEST the NEUTRAL Switch
For power In, and On / Off ... when the Trans is in Neutral or in gear.

    Test the CLUTCH Switch.
    Unplugged
    Plugged-in
For power On / Off when the Lever is Pullled
Look to see that the Wiring for the Clutch Switch did not get pinched and grounded anywhere between the Switch and the Quick-Connect.

Use a 9 Volt Battery and TEST the RELAYS are Opening and Closing.
