I just got done rebuilding my 1980 xj650 and the dam oil sensor switch is not letting the motor turn over...and yes there is oil. I bypassed it by directly connecting the battery to the starter and got her to kick over. I have already spent way too much dough on the bike and do not want to buy more parts. I want to bypass the switch, it only has 1 wire going to the sensor, so I cannot just twist the 2 connections together(like bypassing the kill switch) Anybody know how?

    Find the Starting Relay.
Test the BLACK Wire with RED Tracer.
If there's Voltage on that Wire to the Relay, ... Open that Circuit.
If there's NO Voltage ... Make it HOT ... But NOT with a Full Shot fm the Battey.

Just some LOW Voltage to let the Relay "See" Voltage and Close the Relay to let Juice get to the Starting Circuit.

    HOLD ON.

The oil level sensor is NOT part of the starting safety circuit; the neutral switch IS.

Possibility you mixed up the connections and have the oil sensor connected to the neutral switch lead and vice-versa?

You have a problem elsewhere; the oil level sensor is misleading you. All it does is turn its light on or off, it has no effect on starting.

If you "just got done rebuilding" the bike surely you have a manual; if you'd like a scan of the starting circuit page from the factory book PM me with your email address.
