I bit the bullet and dropped four new OEM manifold intakes into my 82 XJ650 w/ YICS during my rebuild and upon my pre-ride inspection today, noticed a sizeable crack on the unit connected to carb #1. It runs from almost TDC down along the outside of the housing. Needless to say I'm surprised at this!

Called the Yami dealer and he is replacing the unit...but curious as to if anyone can cite reasons why this would happen on a manifold thats been on the bike for less than 2 months?

Bike feels like its sucking some air (throttle response and accceleration) although I can't confirm that yet. Guess I'm dropping the tank and carbs again! :) Atleast I know what I'm doing this time!

good point, hopefully NOT since 1982!...will be giving them all a good inspection!

Was more concerned about install methods etc....but hard to muck that up I think....torqued it all to spec, new gaskets etc etc...

Sucks I gotta put it up again, but will get me out on the ACE which aint' feeling much love lately with the Seca in the garage!

It's unusual for an XJ to NOT have cracks in the intake manifolds, yours are just tryng to catch up. In most cases, they're surface cracks that don't go all the way through; both of my 550s have cracks all over them but none that go through so they've been packed with RTV and are holding up fine.

That being said, I'd be a tad put off if a brand new one cracked that quickly.

exactly fitz...a tad off for sure. Was thinking it would take more like years as opposed to months for them to "season" to the vintage of the bike :)
