I've got a 82 Maxim XJ550 that, when I bought it and for a couple weeks, started and ran fine. Now, however, it won't even turn over. I think the problem has something to do with the spark (or at least one problem.) I am getting some spark, sometimes, but it's weak and irregular. This happens when I have it hooked to a spark tester, which should mean it isn't the plug, right? Where and what should I check for a stronger spark/ to fix this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    -James

have you changed the plugs or caps, if you have fitted both 'R' it will give you a weak spark.

Rewind a bit! Does the bike starter motor spin quickly, slowly or not at all?
It sounds like the battery has gone flat.

Try bump starting the bike (The starter motor drags the battery voltage down and if the battery is flat, the spark will be weak or non existant).

If you can get the bike running, switch on the lights and rev the engine - do they get brighter - indicating the alternator/regulator are working correctly.

You could try charging the battery - but DONT jump start from a running car (The electrics will be damaged). use a charger designed for a bike.

    See where that takes us!
