I was so overjoyed to get the bolt loose and remove the oil filter cover that I didn't notice which way the oil filter was put on. Does the flat side of the filter face the engine or away from the engine.

And... to show how unobservant I am when overjoyed, the spring goes between the front of the filter and the oil filter cover?

    Thanks!

can't remember about the flat side but yes the spring goes between the filter and cover. I THINK the flat side goes against the engine

Yep. Spring and washer (probably missing) go between filter and cover, flat side of filter gets pressed against motor.

Install bolt (lubed with oil) drop on spring then washer then filter; press against motor and get the bolt started.

Bolt does NOT get tightened very tight! 11 ft/lb.

It was better that you asked; BOTH PO's of my 550s had the oil filter/spring installed incorrectly. You can't go by what you found.

rather than starting a new thread maybe someone can answer me here.

If I have rather dark oil - Will it take 1 or 2 oil changes to properly flush it out and get it as clear/clean as possible?

Any suitable "temporary" oil for the "flush" oil change if recommended?

I'm thinking of getting the spin on kit soon, but obviously 2x filters and 2x changes worth of oil will add up for my first personal oil change.

Damn, my filters have been incorrect installed all the time, since I have put them in like they were at the first time when I changed oil...
