the taillight is from ebay. the rear fender from tractor supply. its a 6" wide trailer fender, that I cut to the shape and size I wanted. I do not recommend this taillight to anyone, the LIGHT is really crappy, hardly show up at all. and the plate has to be mounted vertically on it.

Well today we finished the carb rebuild and everything got them all back together and the pods on, got new gaskets for the boots to manifold. We'll be reinstalling them when I get a chance, my schedule is getting really chaotic over the next 2 weeks, so there wont be much chance to work on it.

whoa, you got lucky with those intake boots, the bolts are made out of some super soft metal and then yamaha used some kind of thread locker on them and they're almost guaranteed to break off in the head

Yeah, I figure that before I removed them, So I used a heat gun to warm up the head, to expand the metal and then slowly removed the bolts. Im new to Motorcycle building but not new to turning a wrench

Hey man, I am also working on my first project. I
got a xj550 maxim that I converted into a hardtail.

I have the same problem with the clutch, its super easy
to pull. I had it running before i cut up the bike and it definitely
wasn't that easy. Did you figure out what it was?

    UPDATE- 7/1/2010

Got the carbs and airpods installed back onto the bike today, mounted the battery and put in a gallon of gas. Then waited a few minuted for the gas to fill the bowls and then hit the start button and It fired right up!!!!

SO IT RUNS, for the first time I heard it run today.

it then ran up in the RPM's pretty high and just sat there, So i played with the thumb screw under the carbs to bring it back down. then it would sit for a little bit and Die or RACE BACK up and sit there. So Now I need to find how to get a good constant idle on it, where should I start now that I know it will run.

its probably racing because you didnt jet for the pods, but make sure the throttle cable is letting the throttle come down to where it hits the idle screw n such

im pretty sure alout of your problem is the jetting also with pods and open exhaust its got to be running very lean if ajusting the carbs and sync. doesnt help thats probbably what it is .but i would definately check it for leaks first

we used a stethascope to listen to the carb boots around the manifold and heard no leaks.

I didnt do a bench sync when I had them off, so imma re-pull them and do a sync on them. and then try again see whats up. But just putting Filters On will make it race up in RPM's? I understand the lean condition, but a spike and hold in RPMS?

So from what I have read, I would be much better off to ditch the pod filters and try to find/get a Stock airbox? becuase it works just fine? Specailly since I have no intentions to make this thing quick.

i have a pvc air cleaner intake set up on mine i got rid of the k@ns bike carburates alout better down low you can use 2 of your k@ns on them under the seat cost about 10 bucks .its alout cheaper then finding a used airbox and 90 percent of the time you need to buy airbox to carb boots for 60+ bucks because they are so hard makes it just about impossible to get them on. there are articles in here on building them. sure makes it alout easier to remove the carbs and it looks better then an airbox in my opinion i know what you mean about making it quick with as loud as it is you will have to be careful around cops with those struts you run over an ant in the road you will know it . but by the looks you have another bike in the garage to ride and this is just a weekend cruiser

Yeah I have a big Cruiser I put all my miles on in a year. this is just simply to skip to bike nite on which is like 5 miles from my house, and Imma prolly burn the tires off it a few times, that all this bike is for, so it doesnt need to be comfy or fast.

Now on your setup there, did you need to rejet?? what size jets? where did you get them? where is the link to building that pipe? sorry, im a newb

I did just order a brand new throttle cable, and a haynes, to make sure I hooked it back up correctly. I am also going to try a PVC intake as well. Today, I welded a seat bracket onto the bike, so now the seat is on.

You should have posted on here that you needed one. I just put a new one on mine, but then installed the apes and had to get a longer one, so I have a brand new one up for grabs. I could have saved you a few $$'s.

To check the throttle cable you just have to make sure it isn't binding, getting hung up, or stretched too far. Check to make sure the butterflies are able to close when you let off the throttle. If it is sticking you might just need some cable lube.

If you haven't synched the carbs yet that would be my first step. Do that and then spray some starter fluid or something to check for air leaks.

As far as jetting, I tried a pvc intake and had bad luck, maybe just me, but I took the cheap emgo pod filters and replaced the rubber that holds them to the carbs with the factory airbox connector rubber and it revived the mid range and improved high end. I am running 132 dyno jet mains, and have the needle shimmed up a click from reccommended on the dyno jet needles. I have a 750 that is all stock airbox and all, and my pod filtered 750 performs just as well if not better throughout the entire rpm range.

well im back. long crazy week of work. today I repulled the carbs and bench sync'd them. reinstalled them, replaces the throttle cable with a new one, and it is a much smoother pull now. Also installed the new solid struts, will post pics tomorrow. tomorrow's game plan is to make the mount for the rear fender, then sand and prime the rear fender. then to re-install the battery and try adn get the bike to run, and Installe the front turns.

well I got new custom spacers made for the new solid struts so they are now lined uip and can be made tight. After that, the day kinda got away from me, with doing stuff around the house, we are selling and moving, so theres alot of other work that needs to be done.

okay well today, i tackled the rear fender mounts, I tried all kinds of differnt ways, but just dont like the traditional look, of how most bobs are done. and I thought since My whole build is going to be around the Jack daniels #7, I decided to make my mounts 7's. here's what we made, and then I welded them on, also thanks to dad's semi AUTO 12 gauge shotgun for the 2 shells to plugs the frame. You can also see the new Solid Struts.

I hate to say this, but you're just going to have to go through all the drouble of drinking two bottle of jack and use the caps as frame plugs, bummer, huh?

or just use it to brush your teeth like ke$sha

well, heres a vote from me against the suicide shifter, i experienced the short comings of it first hand..

now, while i was falling aslees i came up with another idea, either a 8 oz or 16 ox bottle of jack, and use it as a sight gauge for your gas tank, ya know what i mean?

Yea, I already have the bottle to do my sight gauge with, just need to figure what tank I am forsure am going to use. I am doing a Suicide shifter, and will be mounting the clutch right on the shifter, so it is an All in one design.

Got the rear fender painted and the lights and everything installed. Got the rear brake light working with the front brake, but no the rear brake. Where should I look to diagnose this problem? Also Will the turn signal come on and stay on and not blink if only the rears are done? Do I have to have the front and rears on for it to work properly?

check the switch, they're super easy to refurp, you pull the shaft out from the top, sand it with some wd40, then spray the inside with electric contact cleaner, then cut a q tip in half, put it in a drill, use brasso, and run her in there, should work if the switch is bad

and as far as the blinkers, yes they will stay solid if you only have the rear 2 in, i dont kow how to fool the system if you want to run 2

Okay, Today we tore into it pretty full tilt, had a good friend of mine come over and help me knock some stuff out. We got the Suicide Shifter welded and bent so it clears everything, the only thing left to do to it, is to find my top item to make it finished. We also got a sissybar from an old vintage shop and cut it down to the size I wanted and welded it on. Then we moved onto the forward controls, which we just made new mounts and such and moved the stockers forward.

Picture of the custom forward control mounts:

Yes, I have the same signals for the front that I am using on the rear. I just gotta make my new brackets for the front, thats probably next, along with the top part of the shifter, and the new line to get hte rear brake functional now that its moved forward.

It runs, got it fired up and idleing pretty well, except i have a slight whislte on carb one, so imma look into that. I took it for a test ride, down to a stop dign a mile away and back. it was great!!!!!!! Been riding bike for 3 years, and this was the biggest smile to date i believe. It's gonna take some getting use to with pulling out with only one hand on the handlebars, and the other on the clutch on the suicide shifter, its kind of eerie feeling.
