    The quick version...

Grew up around bikes. Dad always had one, and I wore out several dirt bikes growing up. Had a few street bikes, but never for more than a year. Never got my endorsement, always just had a permit.

Met my wife, who opposed bikes. Her brother died while riding a motorcycle. Completely his fault. Apparently he has traveling 80+mph when he hit the back of a parked semi.

My work car decided to dump antifreeze all over the driveway. I'm in the process of fixing it, but uncovering more and more wrong the deeper I get. So in the mean time after 15 years of bugging her, my wife decided I could bring a bike into the family.

So I wasted no time in getting my permit, and finshed up the safety course this weekend. My dad has Maxim 650 he hasn't ridden in awhile. It was in a shop for 2 years. He rode it for a year, then it went back to the shop for a tuneup and ended up in a friends climate controlled garage for the past couple years. He didn't want to sell it, but gave it to me. So I had him take it back to the shop to get ready to ride. I'll pick it up over the 4th of July. I'm pretty excited to have a bike again.

Welcome to the site. My girlfriend is completely opposed to bikes for the same reason. She had a close friend die in a motorcycle accident. I asked what he was doing, and she said he was going 90mph+ on a 35mph country road. She refuses to ride with me, but knows that I'm extremely careful and will not leave the house without full gear on. That helps.

    Enjoy your new bike!

    Welcome aboard:

You're lucky to have the Shop take the Bike in for the servicing.

A great many places have begun to refuse Bikes older than 10 or 15 years old.

Ah, the sweet taste of victory. It's sad that her brother went and killed himself like that, but it's still no reason to keep you from getting one. Glad you finally got her to give in to your addiction to two wheeled machines. Welcome to the site. The people here are friendly and willing to help and answer any questions you have, should you decide to work on the bike yourself. For any parts you need we have a wonderful parts guy. Just pm chakal if you need anything. If he doesn't have it, you prolly wont find it. Oh, and +1 on pics. Post some as soon as you can, and again, welcome to the sight.

Dad decided he didn't want me riding the bike 300+ miles for my first trip. So he brought it down last weekend. Everything functions, and it doesn't look to bad for a 28 year old bike that has been neglected for the past 10 years. I haven't taken any pics yet, but I'll get some. It is just a plain black Maxim with no extra bling. (and the bling that came standard looks 28 years old.)

Dad didn't get it into the shop, but it runs pretty decent. When I got it the idle would rev pretty high when it warmed up, but I got that down with the main idle adjustment. Now it tends to transition slow from high rpm to idle, so I'm reading the forums for similar issues. Will do the WD40 or propane leak check tonight. (depends on which can I find first.)

I imagine I'll be using these forums quite a bit.

Welcome. Again, and you will hear this alot....
By following the advice of the experts on this site you will be
completely amazed at how the bike will perform by putting
the time and energy into doing the basic maint and fine tuning
offered on these pages. Better then new is often the result for
those willing to dive into these motors-no prior training
needed-just a disire to pay attention to those before you and
remember the cardinal rule: NO SHORT CUTS.
    Good luck!

I have a buddy I currently fly hang gliders with, who use to race for Yamaha. I'll be calling in some favors for his services and or general bike knowledge.

Wait a minute? The wife finally let you get a bike after all these years but she doesn't have a problem with you hanggliding?

MaximumX - Hang gliding is safer than riding a bike. Up there I'm usually the only idiot I need to watch out for! Here I am almost a mile high.

non-quotidium - I'm assuming you are making a remark regarding the racing picture. That was a closed track, he wasn't on the street. Your second post I almost get.

I haven't been very active on these forums. Basically because all I need to do is search and read posts from the likes of Fitz, Chacal, RickCoMatic, and several others who have answered the questions I have had.

I really haven't done much to my bike, other than ride it a bit. I did finally take a picture of it. Just after I finished putting on the new shoes.

I really need to get the valves adjusted. While the bike runs pretty good, it is not the same as I remember it while growing up. It starts up and idles great. A little boggy on acceleration, and likes to spit and sputter a little when cruising. the worst part is the exhaust smell. Stinks up the place.

I know I need to get new steering bearings. It wasn't bad with the old worn in tires, but the new ones almost exaggerate the issue. The center indent is highly felt, and there is a little shimmy at 40-45mph.

Rear brake is fine. It was replaced the last time pops had the bike serviced.

Front brake has a bit of a leak at the calipers, so that is on the list too.

Polished some of the aluminum, but loads more to go.

Tank needs to come off for painting, but my step dad had shoulder surgery and won't be able to paint it for a few more months anyway.

One turn signal has been broken and glued a couple times. Still works, but moisture has caused the contacts to corrode. Sometimes the left signal won't flash. Actualy both front signals have been cracked at least once, so they need replaced.

oil filter bolt is stripped and ground down to the next size smaller, so a spin on may be in the future also.

Other than those things, the bike is in pretty good condition for its age.

Nice bike. Your original post said you got a Maxim 650 but what you have there is a Maxim 750.
