? about the Stainless lines.

    Just decided to check the age of the front brake lines on my 80 XJ650, and much to my suprise i noticed 3/80 right there in plain sight, and thought oops, the PO must be some kind of schmuck because niether him or the pre PO never gave much thought about there safety, because i believe they should be changed every few yrs or so.

    So my plans are to rebuild the master cylinder, install stainless lines, and rebuild the caliper aswell, so my ? is as far as the life span of the stainless lines go, what can i expect from the stainless lines?

    i would think they would last a very long time look how long the stockers last its easier on the hose when there is no flex from the pressure from the master cyl if they only last 5-7 years im in big trouble i have alout of ss lines on the equipt at work and have never had a problem with them and some of them have really high pressure.
    you were saying you believe you should change brake hoses every few years i have never seen a brake hose explode on a bike before what usually happens is the rubber starts going bad on the inside so when you put your brakes on the caliper doesnt retract and your brake will drag the way to know for sure if its the hose crack the bleeder open if the brake releases its the hose. i dont know if you have delt with brake hoses on cars visable signs will show long before they blow you get bulges cracking ect

    I had a 6-year old GM S-Truck pop a front line on me out of a clear blue sky, no warning at all. It happens, cars or bikes.

    The stainless lines have synthetic inner hoses, so although I don't know, I would expect the life expectancy to be much greater.

    built my own SS lines for about 75 bucks (dual caliper), they look Awesome. there's so many bikes from our era still with the original rubber hoses, the SS Have to last a long time, I would say until signs of something somewhere, wheather it be by feel or visual

    I replaced the old rubber lines on my XJ with SS lines and the front brakes went from feeling mushy to rock hard. Huge improvement.

    Kinda related: I stomped the brakes on my 98 Dakota to avoid backing into a mail carrier's truck at the end of my driveway and the pedal went straight to the floor. One of the steel lines from the master cylinder corroded through and popped.

    You'd think you could trust steel brake lines. Funny it was the only one carried in stock at the local dealer.

    steel brake lines are fine but they dont bend with movement thats why most cars have a loop in the steel lines off the master cyl. you have alout more pressure on car brake lines especially with power brakes . all cars that i know of came with steel lines copper and stainless will split from the pressure. something you need to think about. once it corroded in 1 place more will follow.you must live in the north its really rough on lines
