The trip reset knob on my bike has been missing since I got it. The local dealer can't get one and nothing in his spare parts bin would work. Anyone know of a source for these or what the thread size is so I can make one?

I got mine for my Maxim threw http://www.powerpartsplus.com/pages/parts/home.aspx

    Knob, Trip Meter (4k0-83578-00) 1 $10.62

There not the cheapest, but have a lot of parts the dealer won't order, these are still Yamaha Genuine Parts, so the dealer should be able to still get them.

I almost hate to say this but it's true. When I got my bike the trip knob was long gone and all that was sticking out was an old rusty screw that someone had replaced it with. I'm not sure if they all are, but on mine the shaft that the knob was on was hollow.

Anyway, I took a toothpaste tube cap and filled it with JB Weld. I removed the screw form the bike and put the head of the screw in the JB Weld with the threads sticking out and taped it in place to let it set. The next day I painted the entire thing black. I put a little more JB Weld on the threads and screwed it back into the shaft. So far, so good.

No promises, but I just replaced my whole instrument panel on my daughter's 82 XJ750 SECA, and if I can find the knob from the old panel, if my wife hasn't throw it away, I'll send it to you.

Might have to send you the speedometer head, it has a broken needle, so you can remove the knob.

I'll get back to you this week end.

    Easy to make.

The thread is some standard thread. I don't have a gauge; but you'll need to buy a small hex nut the right size, some epoxy and a set of designer Yamaha Logo'd Tire Air Valve Caps.

Epoxy the nut inside the Air Valve Cap.
    Looks GREAT!
I have a pic of the one on my 900, but it won't load into the system. Too big or something.

Thanks for looking OneShoe. I have been toying with the idea of tearing the unit apart to find out what the screw size and pitch is and turning a knob on the lathe at work. It is on the winter project list.

If your heart is set on OEM ... I have one I'll part with for 25-bucks.

Sure ... that's expensive for a knob. But, the knob is attached to a white-faced, circular, 155mph Speedo -- with a lightly scratched-up, faux-chrome domed case, off a Virago or some other white-faced instrument paneled Yam.

You got dibs until you pass ... then, I'm selling it to whoever needs it.

I am going to pass on the speedo unit Rick. I am going to try to turn one this weekend. The lathe at work is a bit larger for this work, but you use whats available. I will post a pic of my version. Anyone know what the screw size - thread pitch is?

Solo. Cable Driven. Pigtailed for power. I thought I could gut it and adapt it to the Max. But the Max's speedo is flat-bottomed.

I'll spin it up to ck if it works OK and let you know.
