85 Maxim x clutch hard to pull

Hey folks,

I am new to the site, new to motorcycles and new to XJ's. I recently picked up an 85 XJ700X and I'm wondering if the clutches on these are stiff by nature or if I have a problem. The pull is smooth just stiff.

Have you asked the previous owner if that's the way it was before you got it? or maybe you already know that answer.

I'm currently chasing down the reason mine is EXTREMELY hard to pull. But I did some work to it just before that happened.

 

There is quite a bit of custom work done to this already. The guy I bought it from only owned it for 8 months and rode it twice. He was about useless for information. I have pulled some hydraulic clutches in the past couple weeks and know that a cable will never be like that. Maybe I just need to man up a little

 

I would just replace the cable.

 

+1 with Wizard on a new cable, and check the routing of the cable.
A new cable should do wonders.
Lube the lever pivot a bit.

Personally, I'm not a fan of lubricating cables with any oil since that just collects dirt and dust which binds the cable up.
If you want, use some graphite or teflon cable lube (dry)

I think I can pull mine with one finger BUT I'm a REALLY TOUGH GUY :lol:

I know my hand gets tired pulling Dezi's Seca 750 clutch. When i went from his back to my 400, i thought mine was broke cause it was so easy to pull lol.
