    Hey all,
I've been away for awhile, nice to see most still around as well as some new ones. I've been working away from home a lot lately so the bike has been sitting with the valve covers off and the carbs torn apart. Haven't ridden all year. Need to order some parts from Chacal and the darn thing on the road.

Will probably be asking questions about valve adjustment, mainly how do you decide what size shim you need when you have one thats TIGHT to the cam. I can't get anything in there.

Hopefully, in a few weeks we'll be up and running the prairie.

    It nice to be back.

    Welcome back.

Pull the tight shim, and stick one two sizes smaller in there then check the clearance and adjust accordingly.

Thanks Guys, Ya, I gotta pull that shim this week. I'll have to see if one of the others is 2 sizes smaller. I don't have any sitting around. How can I tell if the valve is burned? I didn't notice any issues when I ran it last. The PO had given me a receipt that the valves had been check and in spec 4000 miles ago. Not long enough to get that tight I wouldn't think. Anyway, we'll see.

Thanks for the welcome back, guys

Should i start a new thread to ask this?

How often should valves be checked AND is this a DIY for a rookie?
What are some signs that it needs checked?

needs to be checked every 5K miles, and theres a DIY in the xj FAQ suggestions, you should do it now though cuz it's probably never been done on your bike, just like everyone elses

For the xj700n the sevice schedule calls for check/adj every
    25.000 km
    15,800 mil
    or 25 months
But I'm more in line with Schooter's suggestion-as my daily rider
thats about twice a year since I can't afford to make runs longer then
200+ miles and only once in a while

Try rotating the camshaft (manually) a few times, that might free up some space. I had the same thing and figured since after replacing the valves it's suggested you rotate the camshaft 4 times or so and check clearance again it might be worth a shot.
