I just uploaded a picture to my gallery of my 85 XJ700 bobber (pseudo-bob). I am doing this in such a way that nothing has been /will be cut other than the seat foam. Current picture is stage one. This is currently on the road, registered, and insured. Needs nothing, I'm just doing this for fun, and just to go a slightly different route than I normally go with bikes.

Thanks! That's the original seat cover, too.

    Dave,

Is that Rodman's old bike? Did you tell him you were bobbing his bike? He seemed pretty fond of that bike still.

PS. I bought the side covers and turn signal lenses from you at the carb clinic you had this year and they work great.

    Thanks.

very nice. I am doing the same thing to my 700X. Posted pics yesterday. Please let me know if you try to lower the rear fender without chopping the frame. I'm looking for ideas.

Handyman, yep, that's the one. He knows, I've kept him up to date on everything I've done with it. Funny, though, it's exactly the same as you saw it when you were here. Only difference is now I replaced the broken turnsignal mount, and took a couple pictures.......well, that and a couple more tanks of gas went through it :)

imi-pro, I haven't lowered the fender at all. Here's what stage one involved. Keep in mind that I had two main goals for this build:

    1. NOTHING except the seat foam gets cut.
2.. nothing is done that can't be reversed to stock quickly

Here's what was done in stage 1

    1. remove front fender - looks raked
    2. tilt bars up a bit, re-angle lever perches - makes front look higher
    3. shave down driver seat foam
    4. re-shape the pan the follow fender contour - looks low-down aggressive
    5. remove passenger seat - makes back look lower
    6. put late 80's virago shock on - lowers back 1" since they're 1" shorter

Stage 2 was scheduled to begin once parts arrive, but that plan may have just changed. I'll update you on this change of plans this evening if all works out today.

Here's what would happen in stage 2.

    1. was going to get a harley bobtail rear fender and modify the inner fender end. Look for one from the 80's some of those were narrower and should fit. Drill a couple new holes and bolt it on.

    2. was thinking about getting a TCBROS forward control kit. This kit does not come with the connecting rods or ball joint ends. So, there's some fabbing that would need to be done.

I like what you did with the seat. I've been thinking about something like that or maybe trimming the passenger seat into a little faux-mustang look...

Thanks! Looks like I'm going to get to do it again, too.

Here's an update: in short, I don't have the bike anymore. So, I'm going to possibly go this same route with my other xj700.

Here's the long version: I don't have the black xj700 bobber anymore-- I sold it to another member of this site, and he sold me his xj900rk. I think it was a pretty even deal....he got a bike ready to ride, and I got another xj900rk to bring back to life. It needs some work, has a few issues, but it'll be hopefully close to my other one sometime.

In the meantime, I'm going to go back to square one and do the same mods to my red xj700 and turn that into a bobber starting with step one as before. Then maybe be able to progress onto stage two.

    We shall see :)

Yeah, I got my controls from TCBros and picked up the universal linkage kit for $50. With everything provided it made switching to the forwards easy as shit. Only light modification needed.
