I just read another topic where someone was considering upgrading from a 550 to a 650. Several different descriptions were tossed out about the different bikes and how the ride/feel.

Being a new rider and this is my first MC, how would you classify/describe the 82 750 Maxim?

I've read before that it was the fastest production bike of the year.

BTW: New rider, First bike, 6' 250ish with a non-beer-gut and 31 inseam.

I love my ride so far and keep buying stuff for it - Bags, Trunk, fairing (still thinking about installing it), highway bars (hopefully today) - But I'm curious if its actually a good fit for my body/experience. Don't worry I won't get rid of it if you say its a bad fit :)

I heard somebody once describe maxims as "sport cruisers", meaning that they're essentially a sportbike engine that's more comfortable to ride. I know mine revs a lot higher than most cruisers, and cruises around 4-5k, so this description makes sense to me.

    I'm on a 550, 6'1", and it's got plenty of power for me ;)

The term I've seen used for similar motorcycles is "standard motorcycle".

I agree with the terms "sport cruiser" or "power cruiser". I usually just say sport cruiser though.

I always use the term " One baadass-mamba-jamba rice burnin' beyotch!! 8O ...but guess sport cruiser would work too... ;)

"Standard motorcycles" didn't have steppy-seats, or try to look like "choppers" of the period.

Yamaha called the Maxims "power cruisers."

    "Performance Cruiser"

The TV Commercial for the 1980 ~ '81 Campaign ended with this Tag Line.

"At Yamaha, we don't build great motorcycles to win races. We win the races to build great motorcycles."

    We know this.

I had a 1200 Sportster prior to my xj650. The xj handles much better. don't feel like I'm fighting it as much and power feels about the same maybe a little less. A twenty mile ride to work on that sporty made you feel like you'd already worked 5 hours. One thing I must admit ....For me nothing made sounds as good as that old HD v twin plunkin over at idle.

No doubt the bike is enough for you. I love the maxim but I totally changed the look of mine. Addded a seca tank.

It depends on what your final product looks like.
I dont think Sport Cruiser would cut it for mine. Power Cruiser sounds like you got some saddle bags on there.
Standard motorcycle does NOT even come close.
I have read about them being call The perfect all around road bikes and that sure as hell seems to be true so that's what I call mine.

I rather like the Knee indents in the seca tanks. Would any be a 1:1 swap with an 82 750J Maxim?

the 750/650 seca tanks will fit. The side covers won't line up. The Seca tanks seem to run cheaper than the maxim tanks. You could probably sell yours and cover the cost of the seca with a bit extra.

I have what was sold to me as a 650 seca gas tank but its just a bit too long to lock on the rubber mount thats on the frame. My seat locks it in place maybe if I mess with the bushings in the front of the tank I can get a perfect fit. Either way the seca tank fits.

I describe my Maxim as a "CM Cruiser" where "C" is for chick and "M" is for magnet.
