A few weeks ago I bought this xj650 that has been hard tailed and bobbed some. I have different plans for this though. I like the drag bars but really want apes. I don't mind the rear fender...but why so high off the tire? So i want to do a flat fender and hard tail struts...will be fun since I don't have much access to tools or welding equipment, not that having a welder would help cuz I've got no clue. haha Then I'd like to clean the frame up and maybe respray it. Then get the tins painted by a guy I know. If you have any help or advice/suggestions please offer away. Koolaid5 do you think you could pm me a parts list for the cables and everything you needed for the apes. I know which bars you are talking about but I may do 12" not sure. Plus I was wondering if you went with braided brakes, Id like to do that. Thanks man. Beer in it for ya if you help with install.... haha and help on yours. ..
STAND BY FOR PHOTOS AS I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RESIZE....

I would just get the apes or whatever bars you want, mount them, and then see how much longer you need the cables to be. After you get the lengths see if chacal has what you need. He was able to hook me up with everything except for the front brake cable. I got that custom made from motion-pro and just went with standard cables to save on some $$. It should be more than good enough for this bike. My GSXR on the other hand....I DEFINITELY went with SS braided lines on that :D

Bike looks good. How does it sound? Post up a clip if you can.

yeah I hear ya on that. I was looking at the xs 5"+ cables that they say are good for the 12"-15" apes. Will they work with the xj ya think..? Ill post a clip up later.

Some guys mount that type taillight under the fender lip. Then you gotta get a tag light ....nothing gained I guess. Hard to minimize with so many rules these days.

How do you do hard tail struts on a hard tail?? I refer to hardtail struts as these type of things...
    [IMG][IMG]

Or are you referring to fender struts that go along the outside of the fender?!?I'm so confused.. (he said as he hobbled back to his rocking chair...) ;)

THe front fender may be a problem when you get up to 80 or 90 and the vibration starts the fork legs to oscolate together and you get the death wobble. If you don't want a front fender you should make a brace between the fender mounts over the wheel and an old fender center section with both ends cut off will work.

Mad_Bohemian- I guess your right. haha Shows all I know...

padre- I don't take it too fast, that's kinda why i bought this bike, to slow it down a bit... but i suppose a brace wouldn't look too bad. any commercial bolt on...? or is a fender the best bet.

Daplumma- Thanks good idea ill have to do that.

annnnd still looking for some answers on weather or not xs cables will fit an xj..?

If you need a front fender to hack up I've got one. It's even painted black already. Shoot me a PM with an offer.

Anybody know where I can buy those relocated foot pegs and gear shifter! That would go perfect with my bobber project.
