After a lot of thought I have decided to replace the blown engine in my '82 xj650j. The old girl has me by the heart apparently.

Looking around all the forums, there is a lot of information on the topic Easiest done is a straight 650/650 swap. Sounds like a 750 from a Maxim is relatively easy with a few tweaks. Even a 900 sounds do-able. So there are as many choices as possible, how about swapping in an xj700?

It's not just the engine, but the ignition and carbs on the 700 and 900 are alot more different than a 750 swap.
You would want to re-use your ignition and re-jet your clean, running carbs.

Or hold out for a 650. They were common.

So I found a good 650 from an '83 Midnight with 37,000km or 22,000 miles with 170 compression. Other than the cosmetic differences, are there any others I need to be aware of in slipping this motor into my '82 regular Maxim?

I recently asked this as well after checking out an 81 midnight...
Other than cosmetics the bikes are the same so you should be good to go.

Just getting the engine or whole parts bike?

Hey Ghost. Just the motor. Whole bike was a wreck and delivery cost from Quebec was rough enough just for the engine. Just wanted to be sure there were no differences between the '82 and '83's. Checking the XJCD and a Haynes, there seems to be little or none so I am hoping my hard-earned cash is not poorly spent, that the engine is as described and runs well.

from what I read its going to be easier than - putting a 650 Seca motor in it where the biggest difference was the shifter but still no machining is neccesary even for that.
