was checking into having a dent repaired in the tank and the fellow says it's double-walled and can't be repaired that way. i am a brand new owner and would appreciate your response.
    thanks.

Not sure about double wall, I cut into an xj650 tank to repair and it was only one tin or what I would call single wall. I welded 14 guage steel patches to repair a couple of bad spots with out a problem.

I then cleaned the tank with metal ready and sealed the tank with Por-15

Of course I drained all gas and cleared fumes first before welding.

I'd take it to a second shop for another opinion.

could you post a picture of the tank and dent you want fixed.

    Keep us posted.

you can try glue (epoxy) a 1/4" bolt to the dent and remove it with a slide hammer. Then add body fille to smooth.

well, i stuck a bent hanger section inside the tank and it sure feels like single-wall to me. i'm going to go back and give the fella the opportunity to adjust his answer.
i'm going to go the POR-15 route as well as the inside is full of rust.
this is an '82 w/only 8500 miles, in great shape except it's been sitting for a long time.
    trying to resurrect her...
    thanks for the replies guys!

Somebody was yanking your chain. It's a simple single-walled tank, like all the other '81-'83 model year bikes.

And like every tank I've ever seen. Is there really any such thing as "double-walled"?
