750 vs 900 swingarm swap

    I've got an 81 750 seca I planned on making it into a bobber/cruiser when I bought. a ride from vegas to oklahoma reinforced my idea it needs a longer wheel base and more travel for the rear but I don't want to mess up the handling much. I'm not a knee dragger, the roads here are really messed up, even the interstate. Whats the difference between the 900 and 750 swing arms? If I change the driveshaft also is it a bolt in or how hard is it to switch? How much will it lower my bike? I'm also considering a 16" wheel for better 1/8th mile times too. what are my options? I'd also consider a virago monoshock swing arm, if I can talk to anyone who has done it.

    I responded to your pm, but just saw your question here regarding the mono shock setup. I'll take a look and see what it looks like, but I think you will run into problems right from the start. For starters, the top of the shock will need to have the correct type of mount welded to the frame. The question is where will it fit, will it have the correct angle, etc....

    I haven't measured the mono swingarm pivot, but I'll do that in the next few days.

    The 900 Swingarm isn't going to solve your dilemma.

    The major difference is at the Right Rear, ... where the Swingarm has fittings and spacers needed to accommodate the suspended Rear Disc Brake Caliper and Rotor.

    The "Horseshoe" of the 900's Forward section -- between the pivoting ends is built to handle the weight and stresses so there is little room for a Rear Tire wider than 120.

    I recently read a thread about a 650-900 engine swap and the statement was made that the swingarms should be swapped too, well I was hoping a longer swingarm and driveshaft would fit for more travel and a smoother ride, also I weigh 235 the stock seca seat is too small to ride two up very far and and the front wheel likes to pop up, sometimes unexpectedly so I built a solo seat.
    The modern cruisers are pretty whimpy in horsepower on bikes weighing less than 600 lbs so I thought I might make a hybrid. I wish yamaha followed through on the maxim instead of v-twin middle weights, theirs just something about the way the 4 in-a-rows run and accelerate that has me hooked.

    I want a 130 tire on mine.... Did you have to tweak anything to get it on there? I don't need anything crazy fat, but the 110 on there isn't quite doing it for me

    Rick is right......the the right side the rear wheel is a disc brake setup. I would suspect that the thread that you read may have been intending to say swap the rear gear--it may be built differently to accomodate greater horsepower? just thinking it through.........

    My 1984 XJ750RL & my XJ900's are completly interchangeable in the rear end , both have a rear disc brakes.

    I'm running a 140/70 on my XJ chopper & somewhere on here an english guy notched his swingarm & runs a 150.
    I'm working on extending my swingarm a couple of inches to drop the rear down but sticking with the 140 or 150 tire

    1984 XJ750RL Seca models are completely different than the 1981-83 XJ750 Seca (north America) and the 1981-84 XJ750 non-North American models. The XJ750RL is actually an XJ900 frame/body/chassis with a 750cc engine in it.

    The XJ750 Maxim/Seca (all except the 750RL) swingarms and driveshafts are smaller/shorter/narrower than the XJ700/XJ900 (and XJ750RL) type. They do not readily interchange. But with enough beers and amps, anything is possible.......

    hahahaha...... that's why I think my goal is just going to be a 130. I think if I go with your motto there (beers and amps) I'll end up with just pieces of a bike :D

    I thought I was the only one with a 750RL.

    OK, I guess it's time to buy a 140/70 and see if I can get it to fit.. Did you have to do any Mods to get that on there OL_750 or did it go straight on.. Have you got a photo?

    The 140 I use is a Bridgestone Battlax & it fits in just neatly with no mods at all. I'll take a pic & get it up in the next few days. 8)

    Not sure where you are Swissjon but there are a few 750RL around here.

    LoL.. I'm English, but I emigrated because the weather there is.. Umm.. Well you heard the rumours.. They're true, and I like riding in the dry..

    The Bridgestone is a nice looking tyre.. I haven't got my bike with me today.. What size is the rear wheel? 17 or 18?

    18 inch rear. The RL ,
    Checkout my gallery the rear is a 130 in the pics
    I believe to be mainly in Canada & Oz , about 800 built. Eng 45T , about 200 built mainly came to Oz & 45L eng went to Canada & the rest of the world.

    Warm weather for riding & long roads .... can't beat this country.. :lol:

    LoL.. An Ex-Pat.. Just like most of you, just with a few hundred years difference since I left. I upped sticks 5 years ago and my only regret was not concentrating in the French lessons at school. :)

    Damn.. That's what I thought.. I can't find any local dealers that do that size in anything other than Enduro tyres, and even then, they're 130/80's

    Hmm.. I'll have to turn to fleabay!
